Tomorrowland Festival will go ahead as planned despite horrifying main stage blaze

Despite a fire destroying the main stage at Tomorrowland festival, the music event will still go ahead as planned, welcoming an estimated 100,000 festivalgoers

The main stage will remain shut

Iconic music festival Tomorrowland will go ahead despite the devastating fire.

The mainstage being engulfed in flames on Wednesday, just a day before the Belgian festival was due to kick off, but organisers are pushing on and have confirmed it will proceed as planned.

They took to Instagram to share an update about the unfortunate incident: “Due to a serious incident and fire on the Tomorrowland Mainstage, our beloved Mainstage has been severely damaged.” Importantly, they reassured everyone that there were no casualties from the blaze.

The festival is scheduled to run from July 18 to July 20, with a second weekend lined up from July 24 to July 27, and they are set to open the DreamVille campsite on Thursday, hosting a variety of events and performances.

About 100,000 people are expected in the town of Boom, with many planning to camp on site. They said they are focused on finding solutions for the festival weekend.

Tomorrowland spokesperson Debby Wilmsen said during a press conference: “Years of love and passion have gone into building that stage. Those teams are devastated.

“Tomorrow, 38,000 festival-goers will arrive. We’re really looking forward to that, and we’re going to give them a warm welcome and make it a wonderful festival.”

Debby went on to assure that the Tomorrowland stages were still “intact,” declaring: “The intention is for the festival to go ahead. But we can’t do magic, so it will be without the main stage. Our production team will now do everything they can to make it truly special.”

The cause of the fire remains a mystery. In some videos, what sounded like fireworks could be heard popping. Sources told the Gazet van Antwerpen that something may have gone wrong while the main stage’s fireworks cannons were being tested.

Insiders told Gazet van Antwerpen that something might have gone pear-shaped during a test run of the main stage’s fireworks cannons.

A local firefighter shared with journalists that the blaze had “spread very quickly,” likely due to the “materials used” on stage, as reported by Rolling Stone.

The firefighter said: “Despite all our resources, it was impossible to stop something like that. We tried to extinguish the fire, but as soon as you realize you’re not succeeding, you have to limit the damage to the rest of the festival site. That’s what we did. Everything is under control.”

Since it began over two decades ago, Tomorrowland has skyrocketed in popularity. The music festival has seen a host of big names grace its stages, and this year’s lineup boasts EDM giants such as Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta, Steve Aoki, Dillon Francis, Deadmau5, and Eric Prydz.
