A legendary Marvel actor has confessed they’ve been privately “suffering” with their health.

Black Panther star Lupita Nyong’o recently took to social media to reveal that she was diagnosed with an illness 10 years ago and explained more about what she’s been dealing with.

She declared: “Silence serves no one” and revealed she has chronic uterine fibroids. The condition involves non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb.

Lupita, 42, explained is was “speaking up” about her journey and posted a series of photographs before expressing hope that her experience would “resonate with anyone else who has ever felt dismissed, confused or alone.”

“I hope to seek answers for the far too many women dealing with uterine fibroids (80% of Black women and 70% of white women by age 50!). We deserve better. It’s time to demand it.”

She then announced: “1. Today, I joined Congresswomen @repshontel, @repyvetteclarke, @repbonnie, @reprobinkelly and Senators @sen_alsobrooks and @senlbr in Washington DC to introduce a package of uterine fibroid Congressional bills. These bills would expand research funding, increase early detection and interventions for uterine fibroids, study the causes of uterine cancer, and increase public awareness,” reports the Mirror.

“2. In partnership with the Foundation for Women’s Health, I’m launching the FWH x Lupita Nyong’o Uterine Fibroid Research Grant. @foundationwomenshealth will seek research proposals to develop minimally invasive or non-invasive treatments for uterine fibroids to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life for the 15 million patients suffering from this chronic condition in the U.S. alone.”

A picture of Lupita from the Oscars in 2014 captured the moment she won an award, which was also the year she discovered she had uterine fibroids.

After undergoing surgery to extract 30 fibroids, she asked her doctor on preventative measures against their return. Her doctor’s responded: “You can’t. It’s only a matter of time until they grown again.”

She continued by outlining the symptoms of fibroids, highlighting that some individuals exhibit no symptoms whatsoever. Lupita emphasised: “8 out of 10 Black women and 7 out of 10 white women will experience fibroids. Yet we speak so little of them.”

“When we reach puberty, we’re taught that periods mean pain, and that pain is simply part of being a woman. I started talking about my experience privately, and I realised so many women are going through this. We’re struggling alone with something that affects most of us. No more suffering in silence!”
