Claudia Winkleman opens up on daughter's horrific Halloween fire accident

TV host Claudia Winkleman suffered years of flashbacks of her daughter’s horrifying Halloween accident.

Matilda was eight when her fancy dress costume went up in flames after she brushed against a candle.

The Strictly presenter’s daughter suffered severe burns in the incident six years ago.

Neighbour Jamie Poulton sustained second degree burns after he tried to put out the fire with his bare hands.

Claudia admitted she was traumatised by vivid memories of the accident and was only able to cope with the help of her close pal, child psychologist Tanya Byron.

Speaking to Tanya on their podcast How Did We Get Here?, Claudia said: “We can say out loud you helped me with flashbacks.

She described the memories as “like a tsunami, it’s so enormous you think you’re going to drown so instead you just have to shove it to one side.”

Claudia, 48, said she has had to stop herself being over-protective as a parent.

Tanya was among the first people Claudia contacted after the accident as the pair had been friends since working together on BBC Three show The House Of Tiny Tearaways in 2005.

Claudia’s neighbour Jamie had previously described the moment Matilda’s dress caught fire as like a “horror film” unfolding.

He said: “All the children were wearing the same kit. It was like a potential horror film in front of me, because they were all going to go.

“This material just keeps reigniting and re-burning. And it is sticky, so it melts on the skin. It doesn’t cinder. It remains hot. It was horrific to be honest.”

Claudia and Tanya’s podcast explores the most vulnerable emotions faced by parents and family members and features guests who have had to go through tough experiences with their children.
