From tragic accidents to time behind bars – Where 90s pop stars are now

With the coronavirus fear still continuing to expand across the globe and seemingly not looking to slow down anytime soon, it would be great to hit the reset button on 2020 and travel back in time – if only it were that easy.

As a temporary measure instead, if only to ease your worries for a short period, we’ve decided to take you on a trip down memory lane, launching you back to the 1990s.

This was the decade when tapes – yes, tapes and not CDs – were an actual thing. With an A and B side and having to wait for what felt like an entire eternity for the thing to rewind.

But, what happened to the pop stars who dominated the charts back then now?

Peter Andre

Peter Andre rocketed to fame back in 1996, showcasing his muscular body and rippling abs under a waterfall while singing Mysterious Girl.

Women went wild for the hitmaker, flinging their underwear at him at any given opportunity.

In 2004, he appeared on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and met his future wife Katie Price, better known as Jordan then, who was famous for her huge enhanced assets.

The pair had a whirlwind romance and did marry, in one of the most extravagant ceremonies known to man, later sharing two children together, Junior, now 14, and Princess, 12.

At the time, it seemed as though they had landed the fairytale dream, but it didn’t stand the test of time and the pair announced they were parting ways in 2009.

In 2015, Peter got married to Emily MacDonagh, a doctor, and they also now have two children.

Sonique

Sonique was most famous for bringing people to dance floors across the globe with her hit anthem It Feels So Good.

At the age of 17, Sonique found herself hard on luck and was living in the YMCA, a youth worker discovered her talent for singing and urged her to take up music.

Her biggest success came in 2000 when she released her debut solo album Hear My Cry, that contained the track It Feels So Good – a track that is still loved by many even now.

In 2009, the singer was diagnosed with breast cancer but eventually received the all clear in 2010.

She celebrated by recording a cover of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The Scouse songstresses took the nation by storm with the original line-up featuring Kerry Katona, Natasha Hamilton and Liz McClarnon.

Kerry dramatically left the band just four weeks before Whole Again shot to No1 in the UK Singles Chart.

Katona was quickly replaced by new band member Jenny Frost, with their album receiving a double platinum certification after selling more than 600,000 copies.

Failing to ever reach those heights again, the group seemed to disappear from the music scene, until The Big Reunion pulled together stars of the 90s, including B*Witched, Five, Liberty X and the Honeyz.

Kerry’s luck didn’t appear to be much better as, after leaving the band, she had a string of failed relationships and later opened up about mental health issues and years of drug abuse.

Although in 2020 a reformed Kerry has emerged and she seems happier and healthier than ever.

The band briefly reunited, but in December 2017 it fell apart again, for reasons which were never confirmed by any of the girl group.

The Spice Girls

The girl group took the globe by storm with their cheeky antics, wacky fashion and (not to be forgotten) girl power peace sign that united women worldwide.

In 1998, Geri Halliwell decided to remove herself from the band and the other girls eventually parted ways in 2000.

Mel C, aka Sporty, later continued in the music industry and even launched a successful solo career.

Mel B, aka Scary, launched herself into a different career avenue and took to television instead, featuring on The X Factor, America’s Got Talent, and more recently Celebrity Juice.

Geri, aka Ginger, became a children’s book author in 2007, while Emma Bunton, aka Baby, has a long standing career as a radio DJ.

Arguably, Posh Spice Victoria Beckham became the most famous of all the members after marrying football ace David Beckham and creating a fashion empire together.

Only last year, the girls had a remarkable comeback tour that sold out within minutes, giving fans the touch of nostalgia that they had craved.

However, Posh snubbed the reunion.

TLC

Band members Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas launched themselves to stardom with smash hit tracks No Scrubs and Waterfalls.

In 2001, Lisa Lopes, the rap star of the group, tried her hand at a solo career.

During work on her second album she was tragically killed in a car accident in Honduras.

Despite trying to keep the TLC memory alive, Tionne Watkins and Rozonda Thomas both diverted from music eventually taking up careers in TV instead.

However, the two surviving members reunited for a nostalgic tour recently.

Lauryn Hill

Lauryn began her career as part of the iconic group the Fugees before deciding to go it alone.

She won several awards and broke many sales records with her album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, that featured hits such as Doo Wop and Ex-Factor in 1998.

After a surge of huge success in the late 1990s, she vanished from the public eye, leaving her fame well behind her.

She later returned to the media in 2013, after she appeared in court for tax evasion, which led to a short jail sentence.

Despite growing rumours of a Fugees comeback, it would seem that Lauryn hasn’t yet signed up to reunite and still likes to keep her life pretty low-key.

Britney Spears

When music fans think of the 1990s, pop princess Britney Spears immediately springs to mind with her racy attire and catchy lyrics.

Her success surged after she stormed the charts sporting a school uniform as she unleashed Baby One More Time in 1998.

Britney’s chart-topping triumph continued with hits like Oops I Did It Again and Womaniser that dominated the charts in the early 2000s.

Despite her success in the spotlight, her longstanding career turned sour after she hit an all-time low after undergoing a public divorce and custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline.

Days after appearing in court, the pop icon shaved her hair off and was snapped attacking a photographer with a green umbrella.

After seeking professional help following her breakdown, she seemed to bounce back again.

However the past few months have caused fans to worry for her mental health again, with a movement called #FreeBritney trending on social media, requesting control of the star by her father to be removed.

Britney has since strongly denied any family feuds and simply said her life had “gotten out of control”.
