    NPR Music

Filmed on a sunny day in her Los Angeles home, the at-home concert kicks off with the singer belting out a stripped-down rendition of her 2017 track ‘Tell Me You Love Me’.

    Apr 15, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Demi Lovato has treated fans to “Tiny Desk (Home) concert”. Singing in her backyard, the “Sober” hitmaker belts out songs off her newly released album, “Dancing With The Devil…The Art Of Starting Over”, in a new video that she shared on YouTube on Wednesday, April 14.

Filmed on a sunny day in her Los Angeles home, the at-home concert kicks off with Demi belting out a stripped-down rendition of her 2017 track, “Tell Me You Love Me”. Steven “Styles” Rodriguez accompanies Demi, who looks chic in a grey blazer and a patterned skirt, on the keyboard for the clip that is directed by Mike Drew.

She then follows it up with performances of “The Art of Starting Over” and “Dancing with the Devil”. “I am super excited to be filming this outside, because I’m really, really excited about the weather changing,” Demi shares in the new clip. “Spring is my second favorite and summer is my absolute favorite season, so I’m really happy to be out in the bright, sunny California sun.”

She also gives a sweet shout-out to her squirrels, which unfortunately are not featured in the video. “My squirrels are out here. You can’t see, but I have now taught them how to eat from my hand and that’s a big accomplishment,” the singer continues. “So, I just wanted to let you know, that was what was on my mind, and I’m happy to be here.”

The at-home concert arrives after Demi unveiled the music video for “Dancing with the Devil” in which she re-enacted her near-fatal overdose back in 2018. She previously opened up how it was a challenge for her recreate the moment for the music video. “Creating the music video for #DancingWithTheDevil was not the easiest shoot I’ve ever done…,” she wrote of the video, which shows her in a hospital bed and other powerful scenes. “I create my art to heal, and to inspire others. I’m here today and I’m happy you are too.”

Taylor Swift Plays Coy About 'Hey Stephen' Inspiration in Late-Night Sketch

    CBS

The ‘Fearless’ singer cracks jokes about who Stephen, that she mentions in one of her songs, really is in a hilarious sketch on ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’.

    Apr 15, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Taylor Swift played coy about the inspiration for her 2008 track “Hey Stephen” during an interview on Tuesday night (13Apr21).

The singer spoke to Stephen Colbert about the tune on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”, with the chat show host asking whether or not she’d penned the song about him.

“It’s just the power of music,” Taylor said, adding, “Don’t flatter yourself.”

The jokey sketch continued with Taylor holding up a mood board covered in pictures of Colbert’s face, and revealing that she even knows his social security number.

The “Fearless” star then changed direction as she hilariously revealed she’d actually written the song about horror author Stephen King.

      See also…

“He’s amazing,” Taylor gushed. “The Dark Tower series changed my life. Plus The Shining, The Stand. And don’t even get me started on his short stories.”

The sketch then ended with Taylor apparently receiving a call from King himself.

“Hey Stephen” is among the songs listed on the newly released revamped album “Fearless (Taylor’s Version)”.

Last year, the “Shake It Off” singer was legally allowed to re-record her first five albums, which Scooter Braun gained ownership of last year following his $330 million deal with Big Machine Label Group. Braun later sold her masters to a company called Shamrock Holdings for $300 million (£259 million).

“I’ve spoken a lot about why I’m remaking my first six albums, but the way I’ve chosen to do this will hopefully illuminate where I’m coming from,” she said. “Artists should own their own work for so many reasons, but the most screamingly obvious one is that the artist is the only one who really knows that body of work.”

25 Free Performances Come to Bryant Park Starting in June

The park will host events for live audiences of 200 with institutions including the New York Philharmonic, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Joe’s Pub and the Classical Theater of Harlem. With arts performances in New York slowly starting up again, one city tradition is finally set to return: free outdoor events in marquee locations. From June to September, Bryant Park will present a series of 25 programs from some of the city’s most prominent institutions and performance groups, including the New York Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Joe’s Pub, the Classical Theater of Harlem, Paul Taylor Dance Company and the Town Hall.Dan Biederman, the president of the Bryant Park Corporation and the park’s longtime guardian, said the plan for the series began to take shape during the winter, when the park installed its annual ice rink and holiday market.“Thinking ahead to the summer, we thought, the concert halls are probably still going to be closed,” Biederman said in an interview. “Let’s play the same role, making Midtown more cheerful and drawing people to whatever extent we can.”City Parks Foundation’s SummerStage also announced this week that it would be returning to Central Park and other locations with in-person concerts, including a benefit show on Sept. 17 by the band Dawes.Bryant Park’s season functions as a coming-together of New York arts groups, many of which have had few opportunities for live events since the pandemic arrived.“One of the good things that has come out of the pandemic is that there has been a level of cooperation between the different arts organizations,” said Deborah Borda, the chief executive of the New York Philharmonic, which opens the season with four nights of concerts, starting June 9.The Philharmonic began putting on small-scale events throughout city last summer through its NY Phil Bandwagon program, and it is set to perform with a scaled-down ensemble this week at The Shed. Even by June, Borda said, the orchestra does not expect to be back to performing at full size. “We’re not doing Mahler symphonies,” she said.Bryant Park will limit attendance to 200 people for each performance, although producers say it is possible that state regulations could allow bigger crowds as the season progresses. The events are free, but tickets must be reserved in advance. Most events will also be livestreamed.Once arriving at the park, patrons will have their temperatures checked and be shown to their seats, which will be arranged with room for social distancing. The park does not plan to require vaccinations or proof of negative virus tests, but it is considering those as options, according to Dan Fishman, the park’s director of public events.Among the other organizations participating in Bryant Park’s series this summer are Elisa Monte Dance, Harlem Stage, National Sawdust, New York Chinese Cultural Center, Limón Dance Company and Greenwich House Music School. Singers from the New York City Opera will perform a Pride concert on June 18.Many groups and institutions have been scaled down or cocooned altogether since last year.“We’ve been in hibernation,” said Tom Wirtshafter, the president of the Town Hall, which has put on more than 60 virtual programs during the pandemic but, as with most venues, had to furlough most of its staff.Town Hall, which opened its doors in 1921, will close Bryant Park’s season on Sept. 20 with a 100th-anniversary event featuring Chris Thile, the mandolin player whose eclectic tastes range from bluegrass to Bach.Tiffany Rea-Fisher, the artistic director of Elisa Monte Dance, who also curates dance performances at the park, said her company has performed only twice in the last year. It will perform on Aug. 20 with the Paul Taylor Dance Company, and Rea-Fisher said it was not easy to find other dance groups that would be prepared.“It was challenging, finding companies that were ready, stamina-wise,” she said. “You don’t want to bring dancers back after a year and have them hit a performance — it’s just asking for injury.”But like others, she said was thrilled, “smiling ear to ear,” at the prospect of performing once again, and doing so in a prominent spot for New Yorkers.“To be able to do what you trained for,” Rea-Fisher, said, “it’s so joyful, it’s so fulfilling; it feels sublime.” More

Screamers, a Missing Link of Los Angeles Punk, Is Missing No More

An archival release marks the technical debut of a band that helped build a scene, 44 years later.K.K. Barrett hadn’t spoken to Tommy Gear in two decades when he reached out about releasing a secret stash of their old music. There were no hard feelings — the two had simply grown apart over the years — but it was tricky business, regardless. Their band, Screamers, was something of a phantom in the history of Los Angeles punk rock.Despite being one of the most popular acts of the scene’s budding years in the late ’70s, routinely packing shows alongside peers like X and Germs, there had never been an official Screamers release. No LPs, no EPs — not even one measly single. To a certain subset of punk fans, Barrett may as well have been suggesting that he and Gear release the true contents of Area 51. But a five-song, 15-minute 12-inch called “Screamers Demo Hollywood 1977” will be out on Friday.“It wasn’t meant to have an afterlife,” said Barrett, 68, who’s best known as a production designer (“Being John Malkovich,” “Her”), on a video call. “It was just something we did. You document things.”The set was recorded at the band’s then-headquarters, a charming Craftsman in Hollywood dubbed “the Wilton Hilton,” solely as a means to get gigs early on. But after the music was recovered from Barrett’s archives 40-plus years later, and dusted off by the label Superior Viaduct, Gear relented.“Honestly, it wasn’t as if we were adverse to a record per se,” said Gear, the group’s main architect and songwriter, along with the vocalist Tomata du Plenty, in a phone interview. “We actually had conversations with managers and record company people at the time, because they clearly thought we were drawing people to clubs and getting press. But frankly, they didn’t know what to do with us. We didn’t fit their paradigm. And, of course, they were making offers that were useless, anyway.”Gear was speaking on the record about his former band for the first time in at least 30 years, by his estimation. Any lack of promotion on his part aside, though, the shadow of Screamers has been growing substantially since the rise of internet-aided bootlegs and YouTube. These “Hollywood 1977” demos are among the hissy, unauthorized recordings already out there, but hearing a cleaned-up version, transferred from the original reel-to-reel tape, is like stepping into the Wilton Hilton after years of being stuck outside, listening from the street.“It’s not always easy/To get what you deserve,” du Plenty howls on “Punish or Be Damned,” over dueling distorted keyboards, one played by Gear, the other by David Brown, who left the group in late 1977. (He went on to co-found the seminal underground label Dangerhouse; du Plenty died of cancer in 2001, at 52, his illness having been complicated by a long battle with H.I.V.) Barrett anchors the group on drums, playing in tandem with a drum machine. There were no guitars, then or ever, in the band. “We’re talking about a period before ‘punk’ became a bin at a record store,” said Gear.Gear, right, with Barrett in 1978, said the band was an experiment. “You know how chemistry experiments are: They’re going to be a panacea or they’re going to blow up in your face.” Ruby Ray/Getty ImagesThe Screamers story takes place in Southern California, but Gear and du Plenty met in Seattle, as part of the queer performance-art troupe Ze Whiz Kidz, and soon formed a heavy glam band, the Tupperwares, ultimately deciding to try their luck in Hollywood. Barrett was an aspiring visual artist from Oklahoma, and left for Los Angeles with $100 in his pocket. The quartet adopted the Screamers name and were immediate icons among the sea of misfits flocking to the city. (The artist Gary Panter designed their logo of a hair-spiked punk, roaring full tilt.)“Was there something in the water?” said John Doe, the singer and bassist for the band X, who also felt a calling to move West on a whim in 1976. “Yeah, it was cheap rent. And people could own cars — and a sense of freedom.”A clique of “50 people, 60 tops,” according to Barrett, constituted the entirety of the initial Los Angeles punk scene. Concerts were just as much a social event as a musical one, and the nascent Slash magazine served as a “newsletter” for those who were hanging out. At that point, the crowd was notably diverse and free thinking, particularly in terms of sexuality.“I thought it was very inclusive,” said Joan Jett, who was one of those 50 or 60 people, and whose group the Runaways was a source of inspiration to many soon-to-be punks. She also produced the only Germs album, “(GI)” from 1979. “It was wonderful, actually. Some of the best times of my life I remember — or don’t remember — are from that time period.”It would prove to be a fleeting moment. By 1980, the scene’s music was transforming into something else entirely: faster, angrier. Eventually, conceptual acts like Screamers faded away. (A contentious, drawn-out film project known as “Population: 1,” made by the filmmaker Rene Daalder, drove the group apart as well.)Gear said the band was an experiment. “You know how chemistry experiments are: they’re going to be a panacea or they’re going to blow up in your face.” Since moving on, he has lived a private life — he cited his age as “ageless” — working mostly in the “personal computer world,” he said. The arrival of the first-ever Screamers release, almost a half-century late, seems to tie a bow on the band’s saga — but it may reopen it more than anything else. As to whether there’s any danger in ripping away the mystique that was so central until now, Barrett isn’t worried.“Whenever you try to dig out something from artistic scenes, you end up with crumbs that get you a flavor of what it might’ve been,” he said. “Those documents add up to tell a new truth, because the real truth is missing a lot of parts. So I feel like we’ve left some bread crumbs. And this is a pretty good one.” More

Christina Aguilera Admits Follow-Up to Her Debut Spanish Album Was 20 Years Overdue

    Instagram

Having been busy working on two records, the ‘Dirrty’ hitmaker claims to have fallen in love with music all over again after going through soul-searching over the past year.

    Apr 14, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Christina Aguilera has promised fans another Spanish album is in the works, confessing it’s “about 20 years overdue.”

The “Dirrty” hitmaker, whose father is Ecuadorian, has been busy developing two new musical projects – one in English and another in Spanish, and although recording the new material has “re-inspired” the singer, she insists it will be a little while longer before she is ready to share her latest tracks.

“I’m months away from anything being announced,” she tells Health magazine. “I’m simultaneously working on my English record and the follow-up to my debut Spanish album – about 20 years overdue.”

      See also…

“I’m a perfectionist and want to give everything my best – especially because of the soul-searching I’ve done over the past year and the new perspective I have. I am re-inspired and have reconnected with myself. I’ve fallen in love with music all over again, which is a really big thing to say, having spent my entire career in music.”

Aguilera’s last album, “Liberation”, was released in 2018, while her only Spanish-language studio project to date is “Mi Reflejo (My Reflection)”, which dropped in 2000.

Elsewhere in the interview, Aguilera was asked if she is proud of the success she has had. “I’m proud of my honesty. It’s a really hard thing to stick to in this business, especially when you’ve grown up under a microscope at a time when society was very critical of young women,” she responded.

“I’ve had to work through a lot of insecurities in front of everybody,” the 40-year-old went on to add. “Every setback has catapulted me forward. I think that’s my fighting spirit. And, at the end of the day, living that truth and being honest has always propelled me forward.”

Morgan Wallen Vows Not to Return to Stage This Summer Following N-Word Controversy

    WENN/Judy Eddy

The ‘Whiskey Glasses’ singer takes to Instagram to let his fans know that he will not be performing in the coming months as he continues working on himself.

    Apr 14, 2021

    AceShowbiz –
Morgan Wallen has once again addressed his racial slur scandal. Admitting that he needs time to “work” on himself two months after he was caught using the N-word outside of his home, the “Whiskey Glasses” singer vowed that he will not return to the stage this summer.

On Tuesday, April 13, the 27-year-old shared on Instagram a handwritten note about the self-reflection he had over the past few months. “I wanted to let you guys know that I’ve taken a couple months away and feel like I’ve really worked on myself. I’m proud of the work I’ve put in and in many ways thankful to have had the time to do it. I’ve needed this time off,” he first divulged.

“I found this time away to be very valuable to me in many ways, but I feel like I need a little more of it and therefore will not be performing tour dates this summer,” the rising country star added. “It means I won’t be playing festivals or the Luke Bryan tour dates. But it’s important to me personally, if you can, still go to these shows – support country music. Country music is back and that’s a beautiful damn thing.”

The “7 Summers” crooner then promised his followers that he “will always strive to be better.” He further pointed out, “Not only has this time revealed to me the ways in which I want to improve but it’s also reminded me that I am still very proud of who I am and the man I am becoming.”

The letter came two months after he was caught using the N-word in a video filmed by his neighbor. He, however, has already issued his apology and expressed his remorse. “Obviously the natural thing to do is apologize further and just continue to apologize but because you got caught and that’s not what I wanted to do,” he said in an Instagram video posted in February. “My words matter. My words can truly hurt a person and at my core, that’s not what I’m okay with.”
