Dane Cook Joins 'Jeopardy!' Guest Hosts Following Alex Trebek's Death

    WENN

The ‘Good Luck Chuck’ actor reveals he is in negotiations to guest host the favorite TV game show, joining Ken Jennings following Alex Trebek’s passing recently.

    Nov 25, 2020
AceShowbiz – Dane Cook is in talks to guest host “Jeopardy!” following the passing of Alex Trebek earlier this month (Nov20).
The “Good Luck Chuck” star announced on Twitter on Monday (23Nov20) that interim hosts are being selected to fill the iconic presenter’s shoes and he’s firmly on the list to take the helm.
“I got a call from my team today about guest hosting an episode of @Jeopardy and would I be interested in that if they can put something together,” the star shared.
“I could barely spit out, ‘WHAT IS.. YES?’ quick enough.” he added, noting, “I would love to honor Alex Trebek in that fashion!”

When news of Trebek’s death was first reported, the 48-year-old honoured the host and called the show his “best therapy session,” after his half brother was found guilty of embezzling millions of dollars from him while working as his business manager.
The legal case was featured as a question on “Jeopardy!” in 2018 and, at that time, Cook made a joke of it on social media.
“Alex Trebek allowed me to laugh in the face of humiliation,” he tweeted. “The lowest moment in my career was this theft I endured but Alex & @Jeopardy changed all that. My fav quiz show was also my best therapy session and because of it I made comedy out of tragedy.”
Former “Jeopardy!” champion Ken Jennings was announced as the first guest host to appear following Trebek’s death, aged 80, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He also serves as consulting producer and will tape his episodes starting on 30 November (20).
“Alex believed in the importance of Jeopardy! and always said that he wanted the show to go on after him,” said executive producer Mike Richards in a statement. “We will honour Alex’s legacy by continuing to produce the game he loved with smart contestants and challenging clues. By bringing in familiar guest hosts for the foreseeable future, our goal is to create a sense of community and continuity for our viewers.”

Laura Benanti Says Goodbye to Melania and Watches ‘Ted Lasso’

Laura Benanti is about to lose the job for which she’s best known. And she’s not sad about it.For four years, the 41-year-old actress with a killer soprano and a nimble wit has been channeling Melania Trump for “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” But Benanti knows her run will likely end at the same time as the Trump Administration.“I feel thrilled,” she said. “I am more than willing to sacrifice this job in order to keep our democracy intact.”The act has also paid dividends for Benanti, introducing her to those who may have missed her 12 Broadway shows, including a Tony-winning performance in “Gypsy.”Thanks to the Colbert appearances, she said wryly, “People are finally taking me seriously as a comedian.”The pandemic has been tough for Benanti: she and her husband each lost a grandmother to Covid-19. She is also remarkably busy, especially given that the coronavirus pandemic has stilled the careers of many performing artists.Last month, Sony Music Masterworks released “Laura Benanti,” an album of contemporary and classic cover songs that she recorded late last year. It’s a mix of some of Benanti’s favorites, like “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life,” and “The Party’s Over,” and pop songs her producer suggested from the Jonas Brothers and Selena Gomez.“At first I was really skeptical, because I didn’t want to sound like an old lady trying to be a teenager, but when I heard the arrangements, I was really blown away,” she added. “We were able to have 100 years worth of music on one album, and it all feels cohesive — it’s telling part of the same story.”She is also the executive producer of “Homeschool Musical: Class of 2020,” a self-shot, documentary-style special that HBO Max is releasing Dec. 17. The show features performances by and interviews with high school seniors; it was inspired by Benanti’s invitation in March for students whose school shows were canceled by the pandemic to post clips to Twitter under the hashtag #SunshineSongs.“It’s the artistic expression that they missed out their senior year of high school,” she said. She is also back at work as an actor, shooting episodes of a “Gossip Girl” reboot for HBO Max and “Younger” for TV Land, and says being on set now “feels like being in a bad sci-fi movie.”“It’s bizarre — it looks like you’re walking into a hospital, and everybody’s covered in P.P.E.,” she said. “I get a Covid test every single day — because they’re using different companies and will not rely on each other’s testing, the poor inside of my nose is raw — but I’m really impressed with the responsibility that they’re taking to keep everyone safe.”In an interview from the new home in New Jersey she shares with her husband and their 3-year-old daughter (yes, Benanti is among those for whom the pandemic has catalyzed a move out of New York City), Benanti talked about her cultural essentials, crediting her sometime collaborator Ashley Van Buren with keeping her current. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.1. “The Queen’s Gambit”Give me a period piece where a lady is doing something that women of that time didn’t do, and then is also addicted to alcohol and pills, and I’m in. Like, that’s just my genre. And Anya Taylor-Joy is just unbelievable.2. “Stars in the House”Seth Rudetsky and his husband James Wesley were doing two (web-streamed) shows a day, for a very long time, all to benefit the Actors Fund. Our Broadway family is decimated right now, and our health insurance is about to run out, and it’s really scary — it’s dire. They kept people’s spirits up, they kept their hopes alive, all while raising money for the Actors Fund, which does not just go to actors — it goes to everyone involved in the theatrical community. So for me that’s been a really wonderful thing to witness and to be a part of.3. “What Kind of Woman”Kate Baer just put out a book of poetry called “What Kind of Woman,” and I am obsessed with it. I can’t stop reading it. I devoured it one sitting and now I keep just going back and back and back. I found her through Instagram — I saw one of her poems — and I was like, “Who is this?” And we became friendly through social media, which is a new thing you can do, and every week she would post the poems, and I just became so enamored with her.4. “Caste”Another book I’m really loving is “Caste,” by Isabel Wilkerson. It’s never great to read about how Nazis were inspired by our systemic racism, but I think it’s a really important read, especially for white people and especially right now. It’s pretty shocking to me that if it were up to white people we would still have Donald Trump for a second presidency. We have Black people, and especially Black women, to thank, yet again, for saving a democracy that does the least for them. So I feel like, frankly, it’s my privilege and my duty to read books like that.5. “Ted Lasso”It’s the most feel-good television show you’re ever going to watch in your whole life. Look, it’s about soccer in England, which I could care less about. But I love a workplace comedy that does not require you to love the thing they’re talking about. It has that vibe for me, but it’s also laugh-out-loud funny. And I love that it’s unabashedly about a good person — a joyful, good person, going throughout life giving people the benefit of the doubt and seeing how that ripples.6. Jordan Firstman and Caitlin ReillyThey are these two comedians, and they’re on Instagram and TikTok and they are doing impressions that are so next-level funny, so much funnier than any show on TV. Any time I’m needing a little pick-me-up I just go onto their pages and I’ll watch it over and over again. I’m also really excited by seeing how people are using social media and the internet to create their own content. It’s really hard in the corporate world of TV and film to make something really good that you’re proud of, and to be able to do it directly from your own house and onto your phone is kind of magical.7. Virtual Museum TalksI just think it’s so remarkable that you’re able now to basically sit in on a lecture at the Fashion Museum in Bath, England, and watch a lecture on fashion in the Jazz Age. Museums can feel really distant and stuffy, and the fact that people can now Zoom in, in their pajamas from the comfort of their own homes, is kind of miraculous. I am actually very bad at fashion, and I don’t really understand it. But I just like to learn about anything. I just like to get out of my own thoughts.8. GenZHERThere’s a 15-year-old girl whose name is Zikora Akanegbu and she created an Instagram account, and now a zine called GenZHER, that connects young women and mentors, and gives advice on how to get your first job and a ton of really amazing things. And I just think it’s such an incredible example of what these young people are able to do.9. #SunshineSongsAm I allowed to say #SunshineSongs even though it’s my own thing that I started? For me, going and revisiting that hashtag, that people are still posting things to, and seeing all of these young people pouring their hearts out, and the incredible innovation. At a time where I feel like the language that we speak is mostly sarcasm, it’s so refreshing to see kids care about something. So that and also videos of people in Italy singing out their windows to each other. Seeing people pour their art out into a world that feels really dark — that to me is really beautiful.10. “I Can’t Breathe”I’m really inspired by H.E.R. in general — she’s so prolific — and this song in particular feels like something we all really need to hear. Music is so powerful in that it opens your heart to a place where you can then receive whatever message it is, and I think that that’s something that song does really beautifully. More

Johnny Depp's Fans Slam Hulu's 'Animaniacs' Revival Over Liar Joke

    WENN/Avalon

An episode of the animated show sees the characters making fun of the situation between Johnny Depp and ex Amber Heard who accuse each others of domestic violence with a fake movie poster.

    Nov 24, 2020
AceShowbiz – A new episode of “Animaniacs” revival didn’t sit well with Johnny Depp’s fans. The revival of the most beloved ’90s animated series received huge backlash after it featured Johnny Depp joke in relation to his lengthy court case with ex Amber Heard.
The episode saw the characters making fun of the situation between the exes who accused each others of domestic violence. Viewers could see a movie poster featuring the “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” star holding a pair of scissors, which was seemingly an “Edward Scissorhands” reference. Serving as an apparent jab at the actor, the title of the fake movie was “Johnny 2: Telling Lies”.
Fans quickly slammed the show and Warner Bros., accusing them of portraying the actor in a bad light. “Warner Brothers: this is a sick thing to do to an abuse survivor. Listen to the tapes – Johnny Depp has been put through psychological torture and physical abuse. I’m sorry that I don’t find this funny, but it’s no laughing matter,” one fan said on Twitter.

“As much as I liked the new Animaniacs, I can not in good conscience bring myself to support this show or Warner Brothers. It is absolutely sickening to see them use a cartoon to make fun of an Abuse victim while wholeheartedly defending the culprit,” one other tweeted, adding the hashtag #BoycottWarnerBrothers. “WTF! This is absolutely disgusting… Way to go a ruin the new Animaniac’s show for me… #BoycottWarnerBrothers,” another fan similarly commented.
However, some others tried to defend the show, noting that the joke wasn’t about Johnny’s legal issues at all. Instead, it was about the children’s nursery rhyme-turned-meme by the name of “Johny, Johny Yes Papa” which was popular back in 2018 when the episode was written. “…It’s a reference to the ‘Johny Johny Yes Papa’ meme. The joke was written in 2018. Very unfortunate timing, but joke was not about the abuse allegations,” explained one user.
That, however, didn’t make fans stop blasting the show and Warner Bros. “#BoycottWarnerBrothers Some defend this because the reboot was written in 2018 and was capitalising on the Johnny Johnny Yes Papa meme, but considering Depp was a polarising topic for the entire year plus new info even if above was true, they should have just edited it out,” another fan reasoned.

Ken Jennings Tapped to Guest Host 'Jeopardy!' Following Alex Trebek's Death

    WENN/Nicky Nelson/Brian To

Fans totally approve of the show’s decision to have the game show’s champion as the first guest host as one fan even suggests that Ken will also fit to be the new permanent host of the show.

    Nov 24, 2020
AceShowbiz – Sony Pictures Television has announced that “Jeopardy!” will resume production weeks after the passing of host Alex Trebek. It has also been revealed that the popular game show’s champ Ken Jennings will be serving as a guest host for the first few episodes.
In an Instagram post on Monday, November 23, the show’s executive producer Mike Richards shared a statement which read, “Alex believed in the importance of Jeopardy! and always said that he wanted the show to go on after him.” He continued, “We will honor his legacy by continuing to produce the game he loved.”
“We will resume production on 11/30 with a series of interim guest hosts from the Jeopardy! family — starting with Ken Jennings,” the show further announced in the caption. “Additional guest hosts to be announced.”

Following the announcement, Ken took to his Twitter account to share his feelings for the honor. “There will only ever be one Alex Trebek, but I’m honored to be helping Jeopardy! out with this in January,” so he tweeted.

Ken Jennings reacted to him being chosen as the first guest host of ‘Jeopardy!’.
Fans totally approved of the show’s decision to have Ken as the first guest host. “I always knew that having you on my podcast 6 years ago would be a career springboard for you. But seriously, Jeopardy is lucky to have you. Trebek would be proud. Congratulations,” a fan wrote to him.
Someone even suggested that the “Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time” winner and 74-time champion should be a new permanent host, taking over Alex’s hosting duties. “The only problem I have with this news is the term ‘interim’. When Alex passed, you were the only person I thought of who could even attempt to fill his shoes. I hope interim eventually turns to permanent. Good luck!” said the fan.
Alongside LeVar Burton, Ken was among the names that people mentioned as fit candidates for the show’s new host. Fans even launched a petition for LeVar to be chosen as the new host. In response to that, the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” star wrote on Twitter earlier this month, “Even if nothing comes from it, I can’t tell how much how I appreciate all y’alls love and support!”
Alex, who had been fronting “Jeopardy!” since 1984, passed away on Sunday, November 8 at the age of 80. A spokesperson for the popular quiz show confirmed the sad news, “Jeopardy! is saddened to share that Alex Trebek passed away peacefully at home early this morning, surrounded by family and friends.”

AceShowbiz – The Knockout Rounds of “The Voice” season 19 continued in a new episode, which aired on Monday, November 23. At the end of the episode, five singers were sent home while the others were moving to the next round. Meanwhile, coaches John Legend, Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton were the only ones who could use their save as Gwen Stefani used hers in the previous episode.
Desz and Sid Kingsley from Team Kelly opened up the night. Desz belted out “Can We Talk” by Tevin Campbell, while Sid opted to sing “Make it Rain” by Foy Vance. Both singers nailed their own performance, making it a hard decision for Kelly to make. However, she eventually decided that Desz was the winner. Thankfully for Sid, Blake used his save on him, so he went to his team.
Team Blake’s Jim Ranger and Jus Jon then took to the stage for the next Knockout. Jus Jon hoped to defeat Jim by singing “Finesse” by Bruno Mars. Meanwhile, his opponent chose to belt out “Humble and Kind” by Tim McGraw which he dedicated to his kids. Jim’s vocal stunned everyone and the coaches all gave him a standing ovation. Jus Jon’s performance was fun, but Blake didn’t seem to think it was enough to win over Jim. Jim went to the next round, while Jus Jon was eliminated.

'The Queen's Gambit' Becomes Netflix's Most-Watched Scripted Limited Series to Date

    Netflix

Within the first 28 days of the drama’s release, more than 62 million member accounts logged in to watch Anya Taylor-Joy play an orphaned chess genius battling addiction.

    Nov 24, 2020
AceShowbiz – “The Queen’s Gambit” has shattered records at Netflix by becoming the streaming service’s most-watched scripted limited series to date.
More than 62 million member accounts logged in to watch Anya Taylor-Joy play an orphaned chess genius battling addiction within the first 28 days of the drama’s release.

The show, based on Walter Tevis’ 1983 novel, made the top 10 in 92 countries and ranked number one in 63, including the U.K., Argentina, Israel and South Africa.
Celebrating the show’s record-breaking run on Monday (November 23), Netflix VP of original series Peter Friedlander released a statement, which read, “Three years ago when Scott Frank first approached us about adapting ‘The Queen’s Gambit’… we felt it was a compelling tale. However, I don’t think any of us could have predicted that ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ – and the extraordinary Anya Taylor-Joy – would become the global phenomena they are today, or our biggest limited scripted series ever.”
Series creator Scott Frank also commented on the viewers’ response to his show, “I am both delighted and dazed by the response.” He added in a statement, “It’s just all way beyond what any of us could have imagined. But speaking for my fellow producers and the entire cast and crew of the show, every one of whom made me look better than I actually am, we are most grateful that so many took the time to watch our show.”
The highest-ranking Netflix releases include “The Witcher”, which scored 76 million within the first 28 days after it was released last year, and documentary-series “Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness”, which generated 64 million views over the same time period earlier this year.
