The TV Show I Love: ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Stuck on a desert island or confined to a one-bedroom Brooklyn apartment, I will take the 15-year-old medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” as distraction over any of its newer, shinier, more critically acclaimed, more endlessly dissected and meme-fueling competition.I’ve been onboard since 2007. The show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, or its current showrunner, Krista Vernoff, could replace the lead character, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), with an android: I have no desire to ever stop watching. The longevity of my emotional investment is partly the point. Nothing replaces the feeling — unique to television — of watching a show age in real time. And this one has remarkably held up.Besides the occasional tremor when a cast member leaves or acts out — or a pandemic prompts a season to end prematurely, as happened last week — series like “Grey’s” are often taken for granted. Yet the pleasures they dispense are both rare and very real. Here’s why I’m a fan.How I Discovered ItI embarked on my “Grey’s” journey around the middle of Season 4. “ER,” to which I was devoted, was in its penultimate season and running on fumes, and I must have been looking, consciously or not, for another prime-time drama focusing on adults rather than children or families. (The medical genre wasn’t a draw in itself: I never got into, say, “House,” and I didn’t even bother with the “Grey’s” spinoff “Private Practice.”)One night, I stumbled onto Seattle Grace Hospital, and I never left. I can’t remember the episode or why I was hooked — maybe it was an intriguing case, maybe it was a snarky exchange between Meredith and her “person,” Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh). No matter: I was back the following week and have remained loyal. Why I WatchIt’s not just inertia that has kept me hanging on. I have ditched other favorites, like “The Walking Dead,” many seasons in. But “Grey’s” has never flagged in brilliantly stitching together the personal, the professional and the soap-operatically outrageous. Of course, the show handles the medical side of the stories well, deftly balancing one-in-a-million cases with less colorful but just as dangerous illnesses. (It’s amazing how many people have been impaled by implausible objects over the years.)Yet operating-room action alone would not have kept me interested: I have stayed for the ever-changing permutations of horny doctors and to watch characters either settle into relationships or flamboyantly sabotage them. This is a series in which adults have adult concerns, but the impulse control of hormonal teens. The show has also never shied from hot-button issues (Meredith has recently become obsessed with the inequity of the American health-insurance system) or from addressing the moral and ethical quandaries of fallible doctors blinded by hubris, pigheadedness or lust. And all of this has unfurled with a matter-of-factly progressive approach to race (inclusive casting has always been a huge part of the appeal), sexual orientation and physical and mental disabilities — a tolerance woven into the show’s fabric rather than funneled into Very Special Episodes. Why I Keep Coming BackRenewal is built into the show’s DNA: Grey Sloan Memorial, as the hospital is now known, is a teaching institution, which means that new interns and consulting doctors arrive at regular intervals. They are put under observation, and the show either absorbs or rejects them, like a body with a transplanted organ. Established stars can’t sleep soundly either, and anybody can get walking papers overnight. When the powers-that-be killed off the dreamboat Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) in Season 11, ratings did not sink — and the show remains a hit for ABC.If you become overly attached to a character or a couple on “Grey’s,” chances are that at some point you will wind up either sobbing or furiously throwing objects at the wall. And you will keep watching because the show is uncommonly well-written and directed, even when the plot goes off the rails. What I Manage to OverlookLoving means tolerating flaws. “Grey’s” often deploys weapons of mass emotional manipulation that drive me crazy in other shows. I can’t stand sappy acoustic covers of pop songs, but when they play over patients being informed they are going to live or die, I start crying. Likewise, preternaturally perceptive children are my Kryptonite on all series except “Grey’s.” Perhaps this is because said kids are almost always patients, so they come and go fairly quickly. (Many of the doctors have offspring now, but they barely figure in the story lines.)Am I Prepared for When It’s Gone?As a rule, I accept that shows must end. In 2019, the ABC entertainment president Karey Burke said that she would keep the series going as long as Rhimes and Pompeo were game. Pompeo’s contract runs until Season 17, in 2021; she could well renew and renew and renew, until Grandma Meredith bosses around interns a third her age. I will tag along, even if it requires walkers for everybody involved. More

Katy Perry Claims 'American Idol' Is Going to Get 'Really Creative' Amid Coronavirus Lockdown

    Instagram

During a Facebook Live session, the ‘Roar’ hitmaker responses to question how she and fellow judges, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, will continue filming after COVID-19 confines people to their home.
    Apr 13, 2020
AceShowbiz – Upcoming episodes of “American Idol” will get “really creative” amid the coronavirus lockdown, judge Katy Perry has teased.
As the global health crisis continues to claim the lives of thousands of people around the world, enforcements have been introduced to confine people to their homes in a bid to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
As such, numerous TV shows have been affected, with production shutting down filming on all in-progress series last month (March). “Idol” was one such show, and during a Facebook Live session on Sunday (April 12) night, judge Katy was asked how she and her fellow judges, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan, will continue filming the programme amid the lockdown – which shows no sign of ending any time soon.
“What’s going on with the show since we’re all still in quarantine?” Katy said as she read the question from one viewer.
“Well, I think that we’re all gonna have to be very creative,” she answered. “I know that we’re going to get really creative and you’ll just have to be tuning into that creativity that we are probably going to create from our individual homes… We’ll see how this goes.”
Katy, who also said she’d “love to” perform on the new season of Idol if at all possible, opened up about how she’s coping during the lockdown.
The “Never Worn White” star is currently expecting her first child with fiance Orlando Bloom, and admitted she’s having “ups and downs” as she negotiates the unprecedented situation.

“Just think of the things to be grateful for and that puts your mind in a good place,” she urged. “I love you. I miss you guys. It’s a crazy time. This is a weird and wild time and I’m sure a lot of you are going through a lot of emotions. I’m in the same club… I wish I had some answers.”
“I hope that we can all get our smile back again soon. You guys stay safe and stay healthy.”

Incarcerated 'Tiger King' Star Joe Exotic Unraveled to Be 'Scared to Death' of Big Cats

    Netflix

Rick Kirkham, the producer behind Netflix’s ‘Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness’, additionally recalls how ‘unbelievably cruel’ the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park’s former owner could be.
    Apr 13, 2020
AceShowbiz – Joe Exotic is “terrified of big cats”, according to “Tiger King” producer Rick Kirkham.
“Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness” debuted on Netflix last month, and focuses on incarcerated Oklahoma zoo boss Exotic, real name Joe Maldonado-Passage, and his plot to kill his bitter rival Carole Baskin.
It’s been a worldwide smash hit for the streaming service, with Joel McHale taking charge of a reunion special, “The Tiger King and I”, on Sunday night (April 12), which featured the return of some of the programme’s most loved characters, including producer Kirkham.
In his chat, Kirkham told McHale that despite his “Tiger King” nickname, Joe was actually petrified of big cats, and had them sedated whenever he had to get close to them for work.
“He was scared to death of lions and tigers,” Kirkham said. “In the shots you see where he’s in with the two tigers, the white one is blind and the other one is tranquilised. It’s idiotic to think how he’s become famous as ‘the tiger king’ when he’s so terrified of big cats.”
Kirkham also recounted a horrific story about the “unbelievably cruel” Joe, describing how he’d given reassurances to a tearful woman that he’d give her horse a “good life” on his property.
“Before she got off the park – he said, ‘Rick, roll your camera. Roll your camera. Come on, you’re gonna love this Rick’, – he walked up, pulled a gun out of his holster and shot the horse dead in the trailer and then cut it up with a chainsaw and then fed it to the tigers that day,” Kirkham recalled. He also claimed that Joe would kill the old tigers and “feed them right to the other tigers”.
Elsewhere in the reunion special, Jeff and Lauren Lowe, the couple who took over Joe’s Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park, reflected on another allegation touched upon in the series – that Baskin killed her ex-husband Don Lewis and fed him to the tigers.
Asked whether or not he believed that Baskin murdered Lewis, Jeff replied: “There’s no question in my mind that she did it, and we’ve claimed that for years and years and years.”
“Abso-f**king-lutley,” his wife Lauren agreed emphatically.
Baskin has always vehemently denied having anything to do with Lewis’ disappearance. She said in an interview with the Tampa Times on Friday that she’s been receiving death threats herself since the show started streaming, and her publicist told Us Weekly that while she hadn’t been asked to be part of “The Tiger King and I”, she wouldn’t have participated anyway due to her portrayal in the programme.

'RHOA': Porsha Williams Fires Back After Kenya Moore Alludes She's 'Fake'

    Instagram

Kenya claims that ‘there are definitely two’ fake cast members on the current cast members of ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’, though she only reveals one of them.
    Apr 13, 2020
AceShowbiz – “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Kenya Moore recently made an appearance on “Out Loud with Claudia Jordan”. In the Friday, April 11 episode, which also featured Donny Harrell and Mike Hill, she talked about rumors that the show was “fake.”
“How much of the show was scripted? Because people seem to think that a lot of it is fake,” Claudia, who is a former “RHOA” star, asked Kenya. In response to that, Kenya replied, “I can say that the show isn’t scripted at all but there are people on the show that are fake.”
Claudia then pressed her to name the fakest one among the ladies. “I think at this point there are definitely two,” Kenya shared, though she didn’t reveal the names. “I think you butted heads with both of those people,” she hinted.
Seemingly trying to stop talking about it, Kenya sang praises for Claudia. “She’s a great friend. I’ve known her for 20 years,” she said. “It’s been a long, long time and this woman knows several secrets of mine. She has kept my secrets for a very long time and that is why I will always trust her.”
Mike Hill, Cynthia Bailey’s fiance, wanted Claudia to just drop the name, but she refused. “If I was on the show, then I would be very clear. I’d have no problem speaking up for what I see is bulls**t or a fake behavior. But I’m not in the film,” the Fox Soul host explained. “This is about Kenya.”
Kenya did eventually reveal one of the “fakest” housewives, saying, “NeNe is one for sure.” Meanwhile, people think that the other housewife that Kenya referred to was Porsha Williams since Jordan previously had a beef with her.

It didn’t take long before Porsha caught wind of the interview. She addressed the alleged diss in a recent episode of “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen”. “I think that she’s bored [and] that she has nothing else to do,” Porsha said.
Referrencing to Kenya’s claims that her friendship with Tanya Sam was fake, Porsha continued, “I enjoy Tanya. Like, why do my friendships have to be fake, and yet her friendships are real? She shades her friend right there on the show for everybody to see.”

Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Adam Sandler Join 'Saturday Night Live' Tribute to Late Hal Willner

    NBC

Days after the music producer passed away from symptoms consistent with the coronavirus, cast members past and present come together virtually to honor his memory.
    Apr 13, 2020
AceShowbiz – “Saturday Night Live” stars including Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Adam Sandler joined forces this weekend to pay a touching tribute to the show’s late music producer Hal Willner.
The Pennsylvania native passed away on 7 April, after reportedly suffering from symptoms consistent with the coronavirus, and during Saturday’s, April 11, remotely-filmed show, comedy castmembers past and present came together virtually to honour his memory.
Kate McKinnon opened the segment by telling viewers, “The music becomes such an integral part of the sketch that you kind of don’t notice it, but without it, it wouldn’t make any sense.
“On SNL, the guy who scores it only has a few hours. The guy’s name is Hal Willner and we lost him this week.”

Sandler then appeared onscreen from his home, saying, “We are going to miss you so damn much,” while Kenan Thompson added, “We’re going to miss his presence and passing him in the hallways.”
Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, John Mulaney, and Pete Davidson also shared their fond memories of Willner, who joined the SNL crew in 1980, before the likes of Fey, Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, and Molly Shannon joined the tribute to deliver a group rendition of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day”.

The SNL special, the first new episode to air since the sketch comedy series suspended production in March amid the COVID-19 pandemic, also featured coronavirus survivor Tom Hanks as the surprise guest host, along with surprise cameos from Larry David and Alec Baldwin, who reprised their respective roles as former U.S. presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders and incumbent leader Donald Trump.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin served as the musical guest, performing a cover of Bob Dylan classic, “Shelter From the Storm”.

'RHOBH' Star Erika Jayne Defends Brandi Glanville Amid Denise Richards Hookup Rumors

    Instagram

The hookup rumors started when the ‘RHOBH’ cast went on a trip to Rome in late November 2019 where the ladies confronted Denise about a possible affair with Brandi.
    Apr 13, 2020
AceShowbiz – Denise Richards keeps denying Brandi Glanville’s claims that they used to hook up when she’s still married to husband Aaron Phypers. One of them must be lying, and their “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” co-star Erika Jayne thinks that it is definitely not Brandi.
“I know Brandi through Yolanda [Hadid] and I know that Yolanda always thought Brandi was truthful and my interactions with Brandi have been very straightforward and I don’t think that she has a reason to say something this impactful if in fact it was not true,” Erika shared to HollywoodLife.com. “There’s no way she’s pulling it out of thin air. I’ll just tell you that.”
However, Erika had no idea what actually happened between the two. “I don’t know what actually happened. You know so there are two sides to every story,” she elaborated. “So Denise has got her side and Brandi has got her side. I don’t know how Denise is going to, or, if Denise is even going to want to talk about it. I don’t know what happened. I don’t know what Denise has said in her interviews about the whole thing.”
“I don’t know if it’ll be about her being in a relationship with Brandi or whether she said these things about it. I really don’t know what happened,” the 48-year-old Bravo personality continued.
The hookup rumors started when the “RHOBH” cast went on a trip to Rome in late November 2019. The ladies confronted Denise about a possible affair with Brandi, and further fueling the speculations, Denise has not been wearing her wedding ring since the alleged Brandi hookup story broke.
Denise, however, denied the rumors as a rep for her said that “the story isn’t true.” Meanwhile, Brandi appeared to break silence on the rumors as she wrote a cryptic post on Instagram on January 9. “When you want to respond but are not ‘allowed’ to…,” so she captioned a snap of herself laughing and looking zen on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen”.
The 47-year-old fueled the speculations with a not-so-PG tweet directed to Denise on February 3. It started after Denise took to her Twitter account to ask her online devotees for help to decide a new tag line for her for the new season of the Bravo reality show. “Any good tag lines for me for #rhobh ?!? And no… I did not quit,” she tweeted. Later, Brandi appeared to respond to it in a now-deleted post that read, “I might be married to a man but I am still allowed to eat p***y.’ ”
