Gogglebox fans emotional as Jenny Newby breaks down over Covid vaccine update

Gogglebox star Jenny Newby started to well up on Friday’s episode, reflecting on the administration of the first Covid vaccine in the UK.

Watching a clip of Margaret Keenan receive the Pfizer jab in England on Tuesday, Jenny grew tearful before the camera, remarking on the momentous day.

Turning to best pal Lee Riley, she said: “We’ll be all coming together soon, it won’t be long.”

Reaching up to her face as her eyes started to get teary, she added: “Every time I think about it I get emotional.”

Meanwhile, over on Twitter, viewers were moved by Jenny’s display of emotion, as they reflected on the tragic events of 2020.

One said: “Aww Jenny. I know how you feel.”

“Agree Jenny vaccine day very emotional but also agree Lee @MattHancock tears not a bit convincing,” added a second.

“Aww Jenny,” wrote a third.

Jenny and Lee have been fan favourites on the show for years, broadcasting from their summer caravan in Hull since 2014.

The best pals’ emotional tribute to the vaccination wasn’t the first time the cast of Gogglebox has grown emotional over the Covid pandemic.

Cast members were left reaching for their tissues back in May when they watched the BBC2 documentary Hospital: Fighting Covid-19.

The show paid tribute to the hard work done by NHS workers, with doctors and nurses up and down the country fighting tirelessly to treat Covid patients.

One scene in particular moved the cast, as it showed nurse Nancy, who had worked for the NHS for 50 years, leave the hospital after recovering from coronavirus.

Having returned to full health, she shared a heartbreaking message with the doctors and nurses of the NHS, praising their resilience.

She said: “I’ve worked every day of my life. I’ve never been off sick, so you can imagine how angry I am that this business got me.

“I want you all to know that I am truly grateful and indebted to you.”

Joining the show with his sister Sophie, Pete Sandiford’s eyes welled with tears, as he said: “This is making me a bit sad, this.”

Mary Killen was similarly upset by the scenes, telling her husband Giles: “They clap them when they survive.”

Gogglebox airs on Fridays at 9pm on Channel 4.
