Doctor Who bosses spark mass panic as mystery aircraft is spotted hovering in Liverpool

The BBC sparked panic in Liverpool that it was the target of an alien invasion.

Bosses projected a large spacecraft in the night sky over the city in a stunt to promote the new series of Doctor Who.

They chose Merseyside as that is where John Bishop – the Time Lord’s new companion – hails from and where the opening episode will be set.

However locals failed to grasp that it was a stunt on Wednesday night and thought the Sontaran spaceship – seen over George’s Pier Head – was a real UFO.

One frightened local said on social media: “Alert – mysterious flying object seen tonight over Liverpool docks!!”.

Another said: “I hope the aliens don’t get me”.

While a third asked: “Was there a massive spaceship above us last night or did I imagine it?”.

Scouser Bishop – who will be playing Tardis traveller Dan Lewis in the TV show – posted a shot of the spaceship too and tweeted: “Mysterious aircraft seen over the Liverpool docks!”

The new series of Doctor Who starring Jodie Whittaker will air in a few weeks’ time.

It’s her final outing as the Time Lord.

She will appear in eight episodes this year and in two specials next year.

Former showrunner Russell T Davies is taking over the BBC sci fi series with a brand new actor playing The Doctor in time for its 60 anniversary in 2023.

Speaking about Whittaker recently, co-star Bishop said: ” I know everyone knows it, but as everyone says, Jodie is phenomenal.”

“The way she carries this show – the amount of responsibility that she wears so lightly on her shoulders – is staggering. The run’s coming to an end soon and we were all talking earlier about how weird it will be not seeing each other every week.”

Bishop is not the only new face joining the Doctor Who cast, as Game of Thrones star Jacob Anderson has also been confirmed.

It’s unclear at this stage who will replace Whittaker as the next Doctor and, with a series of specials starring Thirteen set to air across 2022, it will likely be a while yet before we find out.
