GMB's Kate Garraway says Derek is in 'terrible state' and Covid has 'devastated him'

Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway has bravely revealed how lonely she is while she cares for her coronavirus-stricken husband at home.

Derek Draper was released from hospital in April after a 13-month battle with Covid.

Kate told her friend Piers Morgan on his last-ever Life Stories show which airs tonight, December 5: “I want him there and I want him back. But his presence reminds me of his absence. So you can feel very lonely.”

Piers sums up the severity of Derek’s health condition as he says: “Derek is thought to be the worst affected living Covid patient in the United Kingdom.

Kate and Piers discussed her home life and career

“He spent 13 months in hospital – the longest stay of anyone who survived the disease. What has Covid done to your husband?” he asks Kate.

“It’s devastated him,” she replies. “From the top of his head to the tip of his toe. His digestive system, his liver, his kidneys, his heart, his nervous system. We’re pretty sure that the inflammation did pass through the brain.”

Kate bravely opened up

Kate and Derek have two children – Darcey, 15, and Bill, 12. While Derek has been back at home since Spring, he is still unable to fully communicate and has issues with mobility.

“It does feel as though I walked through a fiery furnace or fell down a rabbit hole,” says Kate. “The world went dark and we’re still looking for the light at the end of the tunnel, really.”

“He still can’t communicate, he still has issues with mobility. Fundamentally, he’s in a terrible state. Look, he’s alive, Piers.”

Kate has opened up about Derek’s long battle with Covid-19

As well as being Piers’ last Life Stories interviewee, Kate will be taking over as the show’s new host. She will present the remaining three episodes of the current series next year.

Speaking about her new role, Kate said at the time: “I’ve always loved having the chance to talk to people, both on air and off.

“Everyone has a story to tell and the wonderful thing about this show is that you have the airtime to delve into the areas of guests’ lives that the viewers might not know about already.

“It’s also a chance to understand more about the bits we do already know about (both good and bad) and hear it in their own words.”

Piers Morgan’s Life Stories airs tonight at 8pm on ITV
