Lorraine Kelly has denied the comical claim that she bumped off Victor Meldrew in the hit BBC show One Foot In The Grave.
ITV presenter Lorraine was an extra in the hit show based on grumpy neighbour Victor, famous for his catchphrase: “I don’t believe it!”
The popular comedy ended in 2000 after six seasons with Victor, played by the actor Richard Wilson, killed off in a heartbreaking hit-and-run accident.
But although landing an extra role in the show was a “highlight” of her career, Lorraine was quick to play down she was the driver of the vehicle which fatally finished Victor.
“I absolutely did not,” said Lorraine, with a broad smile. “I was in One Foot In The Grave but as myself, talking about bottoms as I do recall.
“It was a career highlight but I don’t think I ran him over… Maybe it was my evil twin.”
Lorraine had been posed the bizarre question just after she was handed the morning breakfast reigns from Good Morning Britain presenters Alex Beresford and Charlotte Hawkins.
Alex and Charlotte had been chatting to actors Richard and Jos Vantlyer on GMB and discussing why One Foot In The Grave had ended.
Comedy legend Richard, 84, revealed: “David ‘David Renwick is a wonderful writer.
“I was doing a play in Manchester and he came to see me and said, ‘I think I’m going to kill Victor, what do you say?’
“I just stopped for a second and said, ‘Kill him’.”
Irish actor Jos, 33, then jumped in and jokingly teased: “I actually think he was killed by Lorraine Kelly.”
He added: “This is true, I think when Lorraine was an actress, she played the woman that ran him over.”
However, the real truth is that actress Hannan Gordon, who played the character Glynis, was the driver of the car – and the one who brought Victor’s comedy reign to a tragic end.
Meanwhile, GMB fans took to Twitter to snigger after presenter Alex, filling Piers Morgan’s vacated hot seat, was “caught out” while interviewing acting duo Richard and Jos.
Alex asked Richard whether he would consider reprising his iconic role, but Richard quickly replied: “Well I’m very pleased to hear you say but of course you know that Victor Meldrew is dead?”
The ITV weatherman fell about laughing before co-star Charlotte attempted to smooth over the blunder, adding: “Well stranger things have happened Richard.”
Red-faced presenter Alex tried to cover his tracks, interjecting: “You say that but actually we’ve seen it happen in the past where characters actually come back to life.”
