The Umbrella Academy star Elliot Page says top surgery has completely transformed his life.

The 34-year-old transgender actor has described the the procedure, which removes breast tissue to produce a more masculine appearance, as life-changing in a new interview.

Elliot told TIME Magazine that the surgery has allowed him to finally recognise himself when he looks in the mirror and provided him with freedom from the “total hell” that was puberty.

They said: “It has completely transformed my life.”

Elliot uses he/him and they/them pronouns, and identifies as non-binary, however TIME referred to him as a transgender man, and he called himself a “guy”.

The Juno star revealed came out as transgender in December last year.

In his social media announcement, the Netflix star penned: “I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here. To have arrived at this place in my life.

“I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey.

“I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self.”

They went on to thanks the trans community for their “courage, generosity, and ceaselessly working to make this world a more inclusive and compassionate place”.

The star was instantly backed by their army of fans online after the announcement.

His wife, Emma Partner, said she was “so proud” of the star but they’ve since decided to part ways.

Elliot filed for divorced from Emma in January after three years of marriage.

The pair said in a joint statement: “We have the utmost respect for each other and remain close friends.”

Elliot went on to reveal that he knew he “wanted to be a boy” when he was nine years old.

He told the publication that he was encouraged to act like a girl by his mother, Martha, who is the daughter of a minister and felt that she was “doing what was best” for her child by urging them to behave in a particular way.

Martha is “fully supportive” of Elliot’s decision to come out, with the actor revealing: “She wants me to be who I am and supports me fully.

“It is a testament to how people really change.”

Elliot came out publicly as gay in 2014 in an emotional speech at the Human Rights Campaign’s Time to Thrive conference for LGTBQ youth.

The star said at the time that he hoped the the news would help others struggling with their sexuality.
