John Lewis Christmas advert 2022 has viewers 'crying' over foster dad storyline

John Lewis has finally released its 2022 Christmas advert – and it’s left viewers in tears after they watched the heartwarming foster dad storyline.

The new 90-second promotional clip – called The Beginner – is set to a moving cover of Blink 182 song All The Small Things by US singer Mike Geier.

It sees a middle-aged man struggling to learn how to skateboard over a period of time, watching videos online of skaters doing tricks.

He has a few stumbles along the way and eventually it’s revealed exactly why he’s putting so much effort in.

The final scene sees a social worker knock on the man’s door as he and his presumed wife are cooking a family dinner.

With the social worker is a young girl, Ellie, who can be seen holding a skateboard in her hand.

She notices the man’s skateboard and he tells her he’s a bit of a skater too, which gets a nervous smile from Ellie.

The family welcome Ellie in as the advert ends.

This year’s John Lewis is raising money for the charities Action for Children and Who Cares? Scotland – and there is almost no product placement apart from the Lewis Bear toy in the ad.

The 90-second clip has left people with a lot of feelings, and some admitted they were “crying” after watching.

One person tweeted: “They’ve done it again, tugging at the heartstrings with an added bonus of a Blink 182 cover.”

Another said: “Love the Christmas advert, no gimmicks or characters, just simple messaging – what you do for others matters.”

A third wrote: “Just watched the John Lewis Christmas advert… and as usual it made me cry.”

Someone else said: “Crying at 7am in the morning. Well done John Lewis.”

A fifth added: “Maybe it’s the state of the world at the moment but The Beginner had me proper sobbing. Well done John Lewis.”

And a further viewer said: “7:10am and I’ve already cried at the John Lewis Christmas ad. Every child should have a home with people who would spend months looking like a t*t to try and make them smile.”

Meanwhile, another ad claiming to be John Lewis’s 2022 Christmas offering has been circulating online, with naive viewers unable to figure out it’s fake.

In it, footage from drag queen movie Tucked is used and it ends with a message about changing rooms.

Sadly, it appears the fake clip is being used to spread misinformation and hatred for minority gender identities.
