Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper has reportedly been rushed back to hospital for a “serious” procedure following the latest setback in his battle to recover from Covid-19.
The psychotherapist was left in a coma for almost a year after contracting the virus back in 2020, returning to the family home last year – but has suffered numerous blows to his health since.
Now, according to The Sun, Kate has suffered another “hammer blow” as Derek was hospitalised again this week for an operation on his kidneys.

A source told the publication: “[Derek] is giving the fight against covid his absolute all, but his kidneys have suffered some pretty serious damage.
“Doctors explained there was no alternative but to operate. Of course Kate and the family are worried but she’s been reassured the procedure itself is routine.”
They added: “Everyone has everything crossed, and Kate is being her usual stoical self and keeping everything running, business as usual, on the home front.”
Derek became Britain’s longest-serving hospital patient after first coming down with Covid two years ago, suffering lasting damage to his organs after the battle, when he was placed on a ventilator.
Kate, meanwhile, has repeatedly been forced to put work commitments on hold while she looks after her hubby.
In her latest update last month, Kate told her fans: “Thank you so so much for all your messages of support – they really do mean the world to me & the whole family.
“I have taken some time off @gmb, @smoothradio & @garrawaysgoodatuff in the last 3 weeks as Derek’s health took an unexpected & frightening turn for the worse that landed him back in intensive care & fighting for his life – again.”
He was forced to battle sepsis after his lengthy fight with Covid.

However, she ended her update by clarifying that things had since brightened, explaining: “Thanks to the amazing NHS teams & his own extraordinary life force & spirit Derek – please god – is back on the right side of it now and I’m so looking forward to seeing you all back on @gmb from 6 a.m tomorrow & @smoothradio – hopefully celebrating @lionesses #worldcup win!”
But it seems their ordeal isn’t yet over, as Derek was taken back to hospital yesterday (August 18).
Since her last update to fans, Kate has since returned to her job at GMB, and it is not clear whether she will take more time off.
