As adults they lead a double life as they share homes, two husbands and a child.
However their world is turned upside down with dire consequences as one of the pair goes missing.
But since its debut on the service the thriller has received a mostly negative reception from critics and viewers online.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the Vanessa Gazy helmed series has received a 28% rating from 18 critics with an average audience score of just 41%.
One critic wrote: “Netflix has made a mint on mystery series full of flat, uninteresting characters that are driven purely by plot and mid-tier actors who provide the sheen of prestige… Echoes, starring Michelle Monaghan, is the latest of these, and boy is it bad.”
Whilst a second critic explained: “Echoes is without question one of the most messy and confusing shows we’ve seen in awhile, and there really seems to be nothing for a viewer to grab onto…”
But despite the negative criticism, the show quickly climbed to the top of Netflix Top 10 programmes on August 21 just after the release on August 19.
The idea was created 10 years ago whilst Vanessa Gazy was studying at film school with the creative team of the show, also made up of Quinton Peeples and Brian Yorkey as show-runners.
The pair previously worked with the streaming giant on the popular series 13 Reasons Why, which starred the likes of Katherine Langford, Alisha Boe and Ratched star Brandon Flynn.
