It’s fair to say Monsters Inc is one of Pixar’s most successful animated movies of the early 2000s and is still one of the most beloved films they have produced more than 21 years later.
The 90-minute children’s film is known by noughties kids far and wide for its loveable host of characters and entertaining story. Many of us grew up watching top scarer Sully and his witty best friend Mike Wazowski.
The tale follows the best buds as they attempt to return a little girl Boo who somehow managed to sneak into Monstropolis after Sully failed to scare her which found themselves in a whole world of trouble. A seemingly sweet and innocent movie, right? Wrong.

Like many beloved films, Monsters Inc has been swarmed with a series of bizarre conspiracy theories by eagle-eyed fans after it became a huge hit when it hit the cinemas in 2001. Even Disney isn’t safe from the compelling theories often found in the depths of Reddit – and this is definitely the wildest we’ve seen.
As the fan-favourite Pixar classic celebrates its 22nd birthday with a bang, Daily Star has taken a deep dive inside one of the darkest conspiracy theories surrounding the children’s animation. Let’s take a look…
The main premise of the theory is that before the monsters harvested the screams of children to power the city, they harvested their blood. Yes, you did read that right. Children’s blood.
Reddit user curlyquirkycolorful expands on her horrific theory in detail, and reveals that the concept came when they noticed a Monsters Incorporated commercial which can be seen playing on Sully’s TV. It says: “Carefully matching every child to their ideal monster, to produce superior screams refined into clean, dependable energy.”
Throughout the film, the movie is heavily focused on how the entire city is powered by the surprising energy source, and the account suggests that Monstropolis must have been previously powered by a dirtier energy. They suggested: “Something dirtier and literally non-renewable that the monsters have moved away from as a society: the blood of children.”
In the real world, clean energy is defined as energy that comes from a renewable, zero emissions source that doesn’t pollute the atmosphere when used. This includes solar power and wind turbines, with dirtier, CO2-producing energy coming from oil and coal.
If clean energy exists in Monstropolis, then it would make sense that the dirtiest energy source was first used, in this case children’s blood. Society then moved on to harvesting screams as a cleaner form of energy, similarly to how we use renewables.
At the end of the film, the monsters discovered the cleanest and purest form of energy, the power of laughter. Just like how our cleanest form of energy is solar power, the monsters adapted the new energy source, moving away from the possibility of children’s blood to their joy and laughter.

Reddit user curlyquirkycolorful isn’t the first person to suggest this horrific theory, as hundreds of users flooded to the comments section to share their similar predictions online. One user agreed: “I’ve thought about this before too. In my mind, before the monsters used screams of fear, they used screams of pain.”
Another added: “Maybe they used to scare the kids to death… thus creating a ‘flawed’ dirty energy source because the kids expired in the process?” A third echoed: “Childrens fairy tales are DARK. The are full of dead children…”
Whether you believe the theory or not, it certainly casts a shadow on the seemingly innocent children’s movie. It’s fair to say we wont be watching this Pixar movie the same way any time soon…
