Dolly Parton has a “spicy open marriage” with her husband of 56 years, Carl Thomas Dean.
The 9 to 5 hitmaker was only 18 years old when she met 21-year-old Carl, and the pair soon tied the knot back in 1966. Though the pair never welcomed children together, she helped raise several of her younger siblings, nieces and nephews together.
And the secret to such a long, happy marriage? It’s apparently being allowed to flirt with other people. Queen of Country Music Dolly admits that “men are my weakness”, but says Carl knows she “loves him madly”.

Writing in her 2017 memoir Dolly on Dolly: Interviews and Encounters with Dolly Parton, Dolly admitted: “He’s not jealous and I’m not jealous of him. He knows I flirt. He flirts too. Yes, it’s an open relationship, but not sexually and I would kill him if I thought he was doing that. He would shoot me too. At the end of the day we love each other madly.”
Dolly likes to keep things raunchy when it comes to the bedroom, and wants to look “as good as she can” for her man. Speaking to E! News, she explained: “Every day, I put on some makeup and fix my hair because I think, ‘Well, the whole world, I’m out here and everybody else sees me all dressed up, and I’m not going to just kind of go home and just flop on him’.
“Nobody wants to make out with a slouch! It’s important to me that I look as good as I can. I think it kind of helps keep things spicy.”
She previously told the Daily Mail: “Men are my weakness. Short, fat, bald or skinny – I’ve had crushes on some very unusual men but Carl knows I’ll always come home and I’m not having sex with these people – I’m just flirting and having fun.”
In a hilarious moment earlier this year, Dolly even proposed a threesome with fellow country singers Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood at the ACM Awards. She joked she knew the couple had Dolly down as their “hall pass”, before joking: “I just had a thought. I know why you’re doing that G.O.A.T. thing!
“I think it stands for Garth Organised A Threesome!” Blushing, Brooks replied: “And I thought I couldn’t love you any more!”
Despite never cheating on her man physically, Dolly has confessed she embarked on a devastating “emotional affair” that left her suicidal. She realised she had feelings for an unnamed man, which went too far and left her reaching for a gun in her bedside drawer.

She wrote in her book: “I was sitting upstairs in my bedroom one afternoon when I noticed in the nightstand drawer my gun that I keep for burglars. I looked at it a long time… Then, just as I picked it up, just to hold it and look at it for a moment, our little dog, Popeye, came running up the stairs.
“The tap-tap-tap of his paws jolted me back to reality, I suddenly froze. I put the gun down. Then I prayed. I kinda believe Popeye was a spiritual messenger from God. I don’t think I’d have done it, killed myself, but I can’t say for sure.”
