Heartbreak for BBC Escape to the Country guest as she fights tears on air after tragedy

A guest who appeared on the BBC ‘s hit property show Escape to the Country became emotional as she looked for a “whole new life” away from the city.

The BBC show sees city dwellers keen to make a break away from the hustle and bustle to picturesque areas of the country. For Thursday’s (December 21) episode of the show, host and former Bake Off contestant Briony May Williams met Kathy, who had been living in Hampshire in a spacious six bedroom house.

When asked why she was looking to leave her home behind and move elsewhere, she explained that the house she was living in was too big after her five children had all grown up and left the nest. But while this would have not been a problem for Kathy, personal tragedy struck three years ago.

Husband David, with whom Kathy was married for years, sadly passed away due to unknown reasons. Despite the tragedy being three years old, it was clear that Kathy was still mourning his loss as she started to well up on why she wanted to leave.

“My lifestyle now is I’m just treading water – I don’t feel like I’VE got a purpose anymore, so I need something to get me up and going,” she confessed. “I need something that’s going to keep me focused again. I want a new lease of life, a whole new life.”

Kathy also admitted that she wanted to trade the hustle and bustle of Hampshire for the quietness of the Dorset coastline, in the south of England. “It’s somewhere that I went as a child on holiday and I just feel a connection to it, and I feel comfortable there,” she added.

Presenter Briony was able to show Kathy a variety of different properties, as she had brought a rather healthy budget of £925,000 for her home. Kathy also stated she wanted to have a holiday rental business – or at least have the opportunity to create one, which gave Briony more to work with.

In total, BBC bosses were able to find four fantastic properties in the region, which Kathy was all too happy to move into, as she had already sold her home in Hampshire. Joined by son Connor, Kathy fell in love with two of the houses that were shown to her, as she envisioned her life in the potential homes.

After seeing all four homes, Kathy was most taken from the second property she had seen, which was based in the county border village of Whitchurch Canonicorum, right next to Devon. Both Kathy and Connor were impressed when they first saw the house, and even compared it to a Mediterranean villa thanks to its walled garden.

Weighing up her options, she took her friends to the property, who eventually put her off the home due to its thatched roof. However, after doing some extra research into the area, she decided against buying any home, meaning the search to find her dream house continued after the cameras stopped rolling.

But despite her not finding her property, she said that with husband David by her side, anything was possible. She said: “He’d be shoving me, he’d be really pleased for me that I’m finally moving forward and starting to live again and get out there and enjoying life.”

Escape to the Country airs every weekday at 3pm on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer.
