Baffled TV viewers want to ‘rip their eyes out’ as new KFC advert divides the nation

KFC‘s brand new advert has left plenty of viewers divided – with one dubbing it the “weirdest advert ever.”

On Friday (June 14) the fast food chain premiered its new advertisement. Packed full of references to horror movie 28 Days Later, Netflix smash Stranger Things and even Micheal Jackson’s Thriller, the one-minute-49-second clip has left plenty of people talking online.

In the video, the chicken shop opts for a humorous take on politics and AI, accompanied by a thumping soundtrack. There’s also a huge flash mob that ends with a shot of a dancing chicken, before “Believe Chicken” pops up on the screen.

After watching the advert, viewers were quick to share their thoughts – and it’s fair to say they are divided. On X, formerly known as Twitter, one person said: “I could watch that @KFC advert on loop for hours.”

The advert has divided fans

Someone else added: “In other news, that new KFC ad is something else. 28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead, Westworld, Dawn of the Dead – all channeled into a surreal advert for high street fried chicken.”

A third penned: “I was not expecting that to be a KFC advert.” A fourth wrote: “Have KFC ever made an advert that doesn’t make you want to rip your eyes out from cringing?”

The advert was packed full of zombie movie references

Another, talking about the advert directed by Vedran Rupic, fumed: “May be the weirdest advert I have ever seen.” A sixth proclaimed: “ Just saw the #KFC advert. Then I rewound and watched it again. Awesome!”

Talking about the ad, Martin Rose, ECD at Mother, the agency behind the brand’s new campaign said: “All served in a very tongue-in-cheek way, the campaign is here to deliver a bold statement about KFC and its point of difference in the category.”

The advert ended with a dancing chicken

He added: “While competitors may dabble in chicken (we have no beef with that) there’s only one brand you can truly believe in when it comes to chicken.

“Having a simple truth at the core of what KFC does makes a really powerful statement. Standing up and standing out, KFC are simply restoring chicken to its rightful place, the top.”
