Celebs who hate social media – banning it from house and fear of ‘backlash’

Some of the biggest stars on the planet refuse to join social media.

The likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Moss and Brad Pitt are household names and could get millions of followers on Instagram if they decided to. But they’d rather spend their time working on the next blockbuster than tweeting about what they’ve had for dinner.

Some stars, like Oscar-winner Kate Winslet, have gone as far as banning Instagram and X from their households. They feel the platforms are too damaging to one’s mental health.

And Harry Potter icon Daniel Radcliffe is scared he’d get into fights with punters on X, formerly Twitter. Daily Star has rounded up the celebs who won’t be joining social media any time soon.

The Red Sparrow and Hunger Games actress has admitted she simply can’t keep up with technology. “I will never get Twitter.

“I’m not very good on [a] phone or technology,” she told Radio 1 in 2014. “I cannot really keep up with emails, so the idea of Twitter is so unthinkable to me.”

And in 2018, she said she couldn’t hack social media as everybody on it has so many opinions about everything. There is always so much backlash,” she told InStyle.

“So many people are listening and paying attention, and they have so many opinions about absolutely everything. I really don’t want to welcome that unless it’s absolutely necessary. I don’t want to put myself out there for no reason”

Whilst the Hollywood A-lister does see the upsides of social media, he doesn’t want to be a part of it. He told GQ in 2014: “You could, you know, combat the misconceptions or the misquotes immediately.

“And if I’d have had that in my younger days, I’d have used it,” before adding: “At this point, I don’t want to bother with it.”

Emma Stone

The Oscar-winning Poor Things actress reckons scrolling through Instagram or X wouldn’t be good for her. She told Elle in 2018: “I think it wouldn’t be a positive thing for me.”

“If people can handle that sort of output and input in the social media sphere, power to them.” She also told EPIX.com: “It seems like everyone’s cultivating their lives on Instagram or on different forms of social media, and what pictures look best of their day”

Daniel Radcliffe

He’s flown broomsticks and mastered complex spells as Harry Potter, but you won’t find Daniel Radcliffe’s tweets popping up on your feed. The actor revealed he was tempted to get X, formerly Twitter, but decided against it as he’d probably get into online spats with randomers.

He told Hot Ones: “I would love to say there’s some sort of intellectual, well-thought-out reason for this, because I considered getting a Twitter, and I 100 percent know that if I did, you all would be waking up to stories of like, ‘Dan Radcliffe gets into fight with random person on Twitter”.

Kate Moss

She’s one of the most famous supermodels of all time, but Kate Moss won’t be trading catwalks for retweets anytime soon. She told The Sydney Morning Herald: “The whole modelling scene is completely different to when I first started out.

“Everything now is so instant with digital photography and there’s no mystique. I don’t have any personal accounts on social media, I’m just not into posting about personal stuff online.”

Kate Winslet

The Titanic icon has banned social media from her house because she hates the impact that it’s having on young people. She told The Sunday Times: “It has a huge impact on young women’s self-esteem, because all they ever do is design themselves for people to like them.

“And what comes along with that? Eating disorders. And that makes my blood boil. And is the reason we don’t have any social media in our house.”

Jake Gyllenhaal

Jake hates that nobody is “looking up”

The actor managed to survive on-screen brawls with UFC legend Connor McGregor in Roadhouse, but Jake is scared of getting glued to his screen. In 2014 he told USA Today: “No one is looking up.

“I take that seriously, I think it’s saying something really important and a little scary”. But it seems he’s faced his fears as he’s since shared snaps on Instagram and has over 8million followers.

Eddie Murphy

The iconic comedian and actor would rather people didn’t know what fruit he was eating. So the Shrek star is staying off of socials for the foreseeable future, and we can’t blame him.

He told Hollywood Reporter in 2022: “I don’t need to be on social media interacting with the fans, tweeting that I just ate strawberries. I’m not doing none of that.”

Emily Blunt

Oppenheimer actress Emily Blunt prefers to keep her life offline as she thinks it’s fun for actors to maintain a level of “mystique”. She told The Hollywood Reporter in 2021: “I don’t need to know what they brush their teeth with. I don’t want to know. I love people being hard to figure out”.

But she’s been lured into it before as she told The Guardian last year: ““I have been prone to getting occasionally pulled into lurking on Instagram, and it just makes you feel terrible. I don’t feel good after doing it. I don’t feel like I’ve done anything beneficial to myself. I feel a little bit wobbly. Like I’ve wasted some time.”

Kristen Stewart

It’s safe to say Oscar-nominated Spencer actress and director Kristen Stewart doesn’t want anything to do with social media. It seems the Twilight star find it all too intrusive.

She told Flaunt: “It’s like you’re trampling on someone’s life without any regard. Everyone can do it now. Buy a camera and you’re paparazzi; get a Twitter account and you’re an informant. It’s so annoying.”
