The documentary was released in 2023 and follows Maya Kowalski and her health journey. Netflix’s synopsis reads: “In this documentary, an anguished couple in Floride battles authorities for custody of their ailing daughter after being accused of child abuse.”

In 2015, Jack and Beata’s young daughter starts to experience problems breathing, headaches, blurred vision and chronic pain among other concerning symptoms. After visiting the doctors, the Kowalski’s are none the wiser but she is eventually diagnosed with advanced complex regional pain syndrome.

She is induced in a five day ketamine coma which helps to reduce her pain but a relapse sees her back at the hospital within a year. Staff are concerned about the amount of drugs Maya has been given and suspect she is a victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, which prompts a call to the authorities.

Her parents then begin a long struggle to prove that they are not abusing their daughter which eventually ended in a lawsuit. In September 2023, Maya’s father sued the hospital for $220 million to cover compensatory and punitive damages.

The Kowalski’s were given millions of dollars

A six person jury voted in favour for the family and they were awarded $261 million. Elsewhere on Netflix viewers have been left gobsmacked by Baby Reindeer, a short series based on a true story of a man being stalked.

After offering Martha a cup of tea, Donny’s life is plunged into a nightmare as she begins to harass him with countless emails, voicemails, texts and more. The internet has been set ablaze with conversation about the show, which has received a very positive response.
