Ed Sheeran’s blunt response to being asked if he’s pals with Prince Harry

Ed Sheeran has delivered a blunt response to rumours he is good pals with Prince Harry.

The pop music superstar, 33, has met the senior royal figure on a number of different occasions. As well as this, the Galway Girl singer has often drawn comparisons to Harry thanks to their strikingly similar red locks.

As a result, there has been much speculation on how much the pair get on, including if the duo are actual friends. However, Ed has now given a swift answer to the rumours questioning how close the redhead icons are.

In 2021, Ed was papped standing at Harry’s door at his London home – and when Harry welcomed him inside, Sheeran made a hilarious jibe to the star. “It’s like looking in a mirror,” the Shape of You singer star joked, leading to hearty laugh between the two.

Ed and Harry have been pals since they first met all the way back in 2011. Harry and Ed have stayed in touch since then, which led to speculation that Ed would perform at Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle in 2018.

But Ed was quick to shut the rumours down, denying that he would be a celebrity performer at the special event. However, he did not fully rule out a performance for the controversial royal figure.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Ed explained the relationship between him and Harry: “I get asked this all the time like I know the Royal family. I’ve met Harry once. [And] that was in 2011 at his grans’ Jubilee, and it was like, ‘Hey. Hey… I barely know him!”

Ed already has previous history with the Royal Family as he received an MBE in 2017 from then- Prince Charles. Being given the award on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II, he said that he had taken the medal from the royals in honour of his late grandfather Bill, who he described as a “massive royalist”.

It comes as the singer launches a new scheme for young people to get into the music scene, as he takes a break from his stardom. In an effort to inspire young people to take up music, Ed admitted that he will be paying a visit to schools to help sing the praises of the music industry.

“I’m now visiting more high schools that really need music funding and you can see what a difference it makes,” he explained to the American outlet. “I’m not an academic person – in the real world I would be viewed as stupid, but I excelled at music and therefore people think I’m good at something.

“I found it massively helpful to be at a state-funded school that really encouraged that. They’ve basically cut funding for that in England so I’m doing what I can to get funding for it.”

Going back to his old school, Thomas Mills High School in Suffolk, Ed shelfed out an eye-watering seven-figure sum to help keep the music classes going. It was later revealed in 2022 that Sheeran had given the school £1 million to help children learn music.
