Kate Garraway is set to be at her most candid and raw as she questions whether her husband Derek Draper really loved her.
Garraway, 56, will bear all in the final documentary about her life as a carer for her husband, who suffered a number of medical complications after contracting Covid at the beginning of the pandemic. Requiring treatment for just under four years, the political lobbyist was the UK’s longest-serving Covid patient when he sadly passed away in January.
However, Derek was determined to have his story be told, and urged wife Kate to make one more documentary on his life and life following his death. The resulting show, Kate Garraway: Derek’s story, will air on Tuesday evening (March 26).

The documentary forms the third part in the couple sharing their journey after Derek became gravely ill at the start of the pandemic in 2020. Kate and Derek released two other documentaries in 2021 and 2023 respectively.
Draper’s final months will be chronicled in the final documentary, according to Kate who appeared on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday to promote the show. She explained that his life before the pandemic will be explored, including his career as a political advisor.
The pair’s relationship and marriage will also be touched on, before going into his health issues. After contracting the virus, Derek was in hospital for over one year before recovering enough for home care by Kate, their family and a helping carer, when Garraway needed a break.
One heart-wrenching scene in the show sees Kate begin to question the authenticity of her marriage to Derek. In a candid conversation with producers, Kate is asked whether she will have to care for Derek for the rest of his life, to which Kate agrees.
“That bit yes I have accepted that completely. I think that’s our role,” she explained. “But how that translates into the relationship is a work in progress.
“Sometimes you show love with a big bouquet of roses or bringing a cup of tea and he can’t do any of that for me. So he’s trying to work out how to love me.”
Kate continues to struggle with his new ways of showing love and even questions it altogether: “I’m trying to work out if I feel loved by him. I know I am but we’ve got a whole journey there.”
Kate has spoken several times about the need to give carers “a voice”, something she has been trying to do with her series of documentaries. She also said that she did not want to let her family and those who supported them down by refusing to release the footage.
Speaking on the filming process for the programme, which was Derek’s idea, Kate explained: “Obviously when we started making this documentary early last year, we had no idea the events that would unfold that ultimately took Derek from us. And in January 2024, after he had passed, I wondered if it was right that it should ever come to air.”
But Garraway was adamant that she wanted to give back to those who had supported the family throughout Derek’s health woes. She also wanted to give representation to carers, who had sent “thousands of letters” to the presenter, as well as tell Derek’s story the way he wanted to.
Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story airs Tuesday at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
