Rio Ferdinand says he’ll ‘stalk’ pal James Corden for Gavin and Stacey spoilers

Rio Ferdinand will be “stalking” his “lying” pal James Corden to get the inside scoop on the final ever episode of Gavin and Stacey.

The mega fan says his sneaky friend pulled the wool over his eyes by denying there was a Christmas show in the pipeline. But retired footballer Rio, 45, joked he will be pestering him to find out what’s in the script.

He told Daily Star: “I will gradually be stalking him more and more as it gets closer. I’m sure I’ll be seeing him a lot more now that Gavin and Stacey is coming, I’ll be his right hand man.”

The pair became pals when Corden’s character Smithy starred in a Comic Relief sketch as the England manager with Rio and the rest of the Three Lions. Asked if he knew about the festive special, Rio said: “It’s come out of nowhere. Every time I see him I ask him about it. He’s been lying.

“I can’t wait for it to come back. It’s one of the best bits of news I’ve had this year. Phenomenal.”

The former England star will “100%” be tuning in with the family on Christmas Day.

He spoke out against helicopter parents who breathe down their children’s necks. The dad-of-five was left to his “own devices” while growing up on a Peckham council estate.

Pundit Rio said: “But now you want to know where your kids are every single minute, what they’re doing, have they eaten, have they got enough money to eat. There are now so many more contact points and controls.

“We actually take away their ability to make decisions for themselves, and for them to have experiences where they fail or mess up. Our kids are missing out.”

Rio is fronting a campaign with McDonald’s and Children in Need today (May 13) for Mental Health Awareness Week. The fast food firm is temporarily removing the smile from their Happy Meals to show children it’s okay to not be cheerful all the time.

Rio said: “I grew up in a house where there wasn’t much talking and it definitely wasn’t structured to be that. So in my later life I found it difficult to open up. I’m trying to do everything I can to make sure that my kids don’t ever feel like that.”

Rio Ferdinand has teamed up with McDonald’s and BBC Children in Need, as the iconic smile disappears from Happy Meal® boxes for the first time ever this Mental Health Awareness Week (May 13th-19th).
