Disney child stars who turned into devilish divas from Bella Thorne to Miley Cyrus

Now a celebrity psychologist has spoken out, revealing why a growing number of former child stars are morphing from squeaky-clean role model to X-rated vixen.

Speaking exclusive to Daily Star Online, Jo Hemmings said: “I think they think they have to [change their image].

“There’s an awkward in-between stage when they have to make their mark in some way and that’s often going to be ‘sexing up’ their image. If they find fame as adult actors, then that’s a phase they manage to avoid.”

Jo continued: “[Their rebellion] is often quite sudden and extreme. One minute they are cute as a button and the next, they are wreaking havoc in Hollywood.

“Because most of us go through adolescence out of the spotlight, even though we know it can be a difficult time, the fascination is seeing these child stars make such a mess of it, under media scrutiny.”

So from foam fingers to boob flashing, twerking to nipple piercings, and smoking weed to dating older guys, here are our top Disney-turned-devilish divas:

Bella Thorne

Annabella Avery Thorne or Bella Thorne as she’s more commonly known starred as CeCe Jones on the Disney Channel’s Shake It Up from 2010-2013.

Bella appeared alongside fellow child star, Zendaya, 21, with the show following their fictional lives as the two played background dancers on a local programme.

However once Bella parted ways with Disney, she ramped up the raunch with her roles, one stand-out role was her part in The Babysitter where she played a psychotic, murderous cheerleader, who also had a very hot and steamy lesbian kiss.

She also sent shockwaves through Hollywood for her rumoured fling with Kourtney Kardashian’s ex, Scott Disick – who at 34 is 14 years her senior.

And who can ignore Bella’s endless nipple-baring photos that she shares with her 16.8million Instagram followers that continue to shock.

This former child star has become quite the rebellious redhead.

Ariel Winter

Ariel Winter had a number of voice acting roles on Disney programmes, including: Gretchen in Phineas and Ferb and Marina in Jake and the Neverland Pirates.

Since then, not only has she gained greater notoriety through her role as Alex Dunphy in Modern Family, but also for her jaw-dropping outfits.

Very much a fan of PVC, Ariel can often be seen in bondage-inspired outfits or severely slashed crop tops and has suffered many-a wardrobe malfunction on the red carpet.

Addressing her wardrobe mishaps to her 3.9million followers, in an Instagram post entitled ‘Rant’ earlier this year, Ariel exclaimed: “Screw always having to look appropriate!”

Modern Family bosses deemed it wasn’t appropriate for her fictional character to have large breasts as it didn’t fit with her on-screen persona.

Ariel revealed to Glamour magazine in 2015 that they would have to “strap them down” or she would wear “big sweaters.”

After she seemingly had enough of trying to contain her bosoms, Ariel took the shock decision in to have them reduced from a 32F to a 34D at just 17-years-old.

Miley Cyrus

Wrecking Ball singer, Miley, perhaps had one of the most dramatic image overhauls of all time once she stopped working with Disney.

The daughter of beloved country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, 56, Miley starred in one of the network’s most popular ever shows – Hannah Montana, which ran from 2006 to 2011.

However, once she left Disney, like a snake shedding its skin, she chopped off her long mousy locks and opted for a platinum blonde crop.

And that wasn’t the only change – her sweet smile was replaced by a cheeky tongue-out face, which she pulled at every possible photo opp.

Miley then went onto straddle a huge wrecking ball in her birthday suit for her chart-topping smash, before enthusiastically twerking up a storm at the 2013 VMAs on Robin Thicke’s crotch with that now infamous foam finger.

However, Miley has dramatically calmed down her image in recent years.

Britney Spears

Queen of pop, Britney Spears also started out on the Disney Channel, more than 23 years ago.

The blonde bombshell was a Disney Mouseketeer on The All New Mickey Mouse Club and performed alongside other A-listers, Justin Timberlake (who she would later date), pop rival, Christina Aguilera and The Notebook’s Ryan Gosling.

Britney was keen to shed her whiter than white Disney image straight-out-of-the-gates when she wanted to make it on her own after working with the company.

She shocked the world in 1998 when she appeared in sexy school girl outfit at just 17, for smash hit single, Baby One More Time.

Since then, Britney has dropped jaws on many occasions, including that iconic MTV Video Music Award performance where she performed in a bikini top with a yellow python as an accessory.

She also had a very public meltdown in 2007, when she was photographed shaving her hair off and attacking a paparazzi car with an umbrella.

And, does anyone remember that other iconic VMA moment when she shared a lesbian kiss with Madonna at the 2003 VMAs?!

The mother of two, has since calmed down dramatically. She now spends time sharing videos of herself with her 18.1 million Instagram followers, enjoying mellow activities, such as painting, or putting on romantic displays with toyboy fiancé, Sam Asghari.

In 2021, Britney won a legal battle which saw her father’s conservatorship terminated following a “Free Britney” campaign.

Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan starred in one of the nineties most iconic children’s films, The Parent Trap.

The then 12-year-old played identical twins Hallie and Annie who were on a quest to get their separated parents back together.

She has starred in a number of movies since then including Freaky Friday alongside Jamie Lee Curtis and fun family film, Herbie: Fully Loaded.

Her stand-out role to date was in 2004’s Mean Girls where she played teenager, Cady Heron, a teenager grappling with fitting in in a new school.

Since Mean Girls, Lindsay has struggled to bag other major acting roles and this in part could be due to her monumental change of image from her Disney days.

One of her most shocking moments included when she was given 480 hours of community service and 120 days in jail (which was revised to house arrest due to prison overcrowding), after she was charged with stealing a £1,500 necklace.

There was then that shocking $1m naked Playboy cover that the late Hugh Hefner said at the time was “breaking sales records.”

There was also the time where she shocked the world by entering into a serious relationship with Mark Ronson’s DJ sister Samantha, who she dated from 2008-2009.

Although we still haven’t seen her on our screens for a while, Lindsay does appear to be in a calmer place. Earlier this month, she was spotted at on the red carpet at a Mail Online party with her mother Dina Lohan and they seemed in high spirits.

The pair seem to now have a great relationship, after rocking-the-headlines in 2012 when cops were allegedly called to break up a ‘fight’ between the mother and daughter.

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez has a number of Disney credits to her name, including Gwen in the Suite Life of Zack and Cody and Mikayla in Hannah Montana.

But her breakout role on the infamous channel was as Alex Russo in the Wizards of Waverly Place, which ran from 2007-2012.

Back then, she was also part of one of showbiz’ cutest couples when she dated music sensation, Justin Bieber who, like Selena at the time, was also viewed as incredibly sweet and innocent –­ and we all know how that turned out!

Since leaving the channel, the baby-faced beauty has taken the pop charts by storm, releasing hits such as 2015’s Good For You and 2017’s It Ain’t Me.

While Selena has never gone-off-the-rails so-to-speak, she has definitely sexed up her image in a BIG way in a bid to shake off her child star past.

From revealing selfies on Instagram to writhing around in her underwear with a near-naked model in music video for song, Hands To Myself, Selena has certainly gone from girl-next-door to girls gone wild.

Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa Hudgens was the lead female star, Gabriella Montez, of cult-hit, High School Musical.

The Disney smash followed Gabriella and her pals as they tried to make it through high school, while spontaneously breaking into song and dance every few minutes.

The star was riding high in 2006 as she was on the biggest children’s film series of its time and dating High School Musical co-star Zac Efron.

However, in 2007, a year before the film series finished, she found herself at the centre of controversy after nude photos of the star, were leaked online, completely shattering her good girl image.

People struggled to differentiate between Vanessa the real-life teenager and Gabriella, the perfect fictional character, and with this, her career failed to ever reach dizzying heights after HSM wrapped.

She has since landed parts in films including Journey to the centre of the Earth with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Spring Breakers alongside James Franco.

In 2016, she turned in a powerful performance as Rizzo in the live adaptation of Grease, just hours after her father died.

However, the stunning star has failed to ever reach the same levels of fame as former boyfriend and co-star, Zac.
