Real Housewives star Leanne Brown got 'caught up' in 'materialistic' WAG culture

Leanne Brown is perhaps best known for appearing on The Real Housewives of Cheshire or being married to Manchester United ace, Wes Brown.

But the star has now addressed her life as a “WAG” claiming that it made her materialistic during the height of WAG culture.

The 45-year-old tied the knot with Wes back in 2009 during a lavish ceremony at Peckforten Castle, Cheshire in front of a crowd of huge names.

Wes and Leanne cemented themselves as one of football’s hottest couples, often being seen alongside the likes of pals Coleen and Wayne Rooney.

Now, Leanne, who recently became co-presenter of Divine on Iconic.com, has addressed the culture, claiming it made her more materialistic.

Leanne claims that ahead of appearing on The Real Housewives, producers informed her that the programme would be “empowering” towards women, as well as showcasing their lifestyle and friendships.

Her co-presenter Leilani Dowding said “empowerment is not what bags you have, what shoes you have, how you are dressing or what champagne you drink,” adding: “Empowerment is how comfortable you are.”

She said: “I get that they wanted to show women in business, there are successful businesswomen on the show.

“Everything was so materialised, for me, it was the Cheshire bubble in a sense.

“Even the WAG thing and I was caught up in that for so long, the latest bags… and I’ve spoken openly and been honest, the turning point for me was, it was exploiting wealth.

“The show was exploiting wealth and people want to see that because they get away from their own reality and be sucked into someone else’s life.”

She continued: “Then they feel like they have the right to sl*g you off if you don’t agree with something or if you’re just a little bit too showy.

“You can’t win because you can’t be everyone’s cup of tea, leaving the show was a massive U-Turn for me, getting involved with the charity, going to Kenya and seeing how the other side of the world live, it’s so humbling.”

Leilani Dowding added: “I think that helped us have a thick skin with speaking out because we did get so much stick.”

She went on to recall a time she was “called out” for re-wearing her favourite dress and pair of shoes on the programme, explaining: “I do wear stuff over and over.”

Leanne was recently dragged into the ongoing WAGatha Christie drama surrounding pal Coleen and fellow WAG, Rebekah Vardy.

Text messages sent by Vardy to her agent Caroline Watt, which were shared in court, appeared to suggest Rebekah believed Leanne’s account could have been responsible for leaking stories to The Sun newspaper.

One text read: “She [Coleen] thinks it’s me that’s been doing the stories on her! Of all the people on her Instagram FFS! Leanne Brown etc x.”

There is no suggestion that Leanne’s account was involved at all in any of the leaks.

Another text said: “I mean ffs Dawn f***ing Ward is still on there x.”

When approached, a representative for Dawn offered no comment.
