Kate Garraway ‘might sell’ £4m home as Derek Draper health battle ‘financially drained’ her

Kate Garraway may have no other option but to sell the £4million home she shared with Derek Draper after his medical care “financially drained her”.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, 56, announced that her former political lobbyist husband sadly passed away at the beginning of the month. Friends of the TV star have now claimed she is “facing up to the fact” she might have to give up their North London home because the care Derek needed was so expensive.

When Derek returned home after more than one year in hospital in 2021, he received 24-hour care at their family property which Kate adapted to make more accessible. It is believed she spent has spent “hundreds of thousands of pounds” over the last few years.

“It is so sad for Kate,” a friend said. “Not only has she had to watch her beloved husband suffer for almost four years but her financial worries have never been far away from her thoughts.

“It has cost hundreds of thousands of pounds to look after Derek and do everything she could to get him better but it’s left her struggling. The house is about all she has left financially and she is now facing up to the fact it might have to be sold.”

They added: “It’s where she and Derek were so happy and also where her two children grew up – but bills are bills and they have to be paid. It’s dreadful for Kate.”

Derek spent 13 months in hospital after he contracted coronavirus in March 2020

The mother-of-two had been open about her struggles, admitting last year: “It’s been tough financially. As anyone with a loved one who is seriously ill knows, the costs go through the roof in so many ways.

“You have to make changes to your home and it affects your ability to work. I had to take long periods off when Derek was first sick and it affects the overall income for the family, as he can no longer work.”

Former political advisor Derek contracted Covid during the early stages of the pandemic in March 2020 and was left with permanent damage to his organs as well as kidney failure and inflammation of the brain. Over the next three years, Derek embarked on a lengthy battle with the virus and was readmitted to hospital several times with different health issues.

He suffered a cardiac arrest before Christmas and died on January 5, with Kate and their children, Darcy, 17, and Billy, 14, by his side. Kate announced her husband’s passing on Instagram, writing: “Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life.”
