Indie-rock band SOAP reveal shock after unexpected Grammy Awards recognition

SOAP – the UK’s most exciting grassroots band have revealed their reaction to being recognised by the Grammys.

The band who are set to commence their first headline tour on Saturday gained international recognition following their unique cover of the Abba smash hit “SOS”. Originally named The Tyne, the quartet have amassed a whopping 457,000 followers on TikTok, with over 10.3 million likes as well as over five million streams on YouTube.

But how do four lads react to the Grammys? Speaking exclusively to Daily Star, Ryan, Josh, Cooper and Noah admit they didn’t notice that their audio had been used by the prestigious academy. The Grammy’s used SOAP’s cover of SOS on a video which they described as a “Q1 Content Dump,” showcasing some of the biggest moments of the music industry up until March 10.

Cooper said: “That was quite mad, they used our sound. We didn’t even see it for five days or something.” Lead singer Ryan added: “One of us commented like ‘Does this mean we get an award or something?'” Cooper added: “That was very strange but very cool at the same time, we’re just waiting for the Grammy.”

Josh who produces all of SOAP’s current music interjected, adding: “It was cool to see SOS, you see the numbers on TikTok and you think ‘wow that’s cool’ but you see something like that and it was like ‘Woah!'”

Although the lads have a new single, Funeral, Cooper admits it’s “nice” to have the track out – but there was no long wait between mastering and releasing. “We had a really old version for about a year,” he said before adding: “It was time to get it out there, Josh completely reproduced it.”

While the lads have been around since 2019, 2024 has arguably been their busiest year, with the lads noting that there has been lots of “change” and a rapid increase in their followers and streaming numbers. Josh said: “I feel we got lucky when we started out, socials were on our side, TikTok and Instagram were great to us but it’s nice to see Spotify going up.” “We’ve all written it ourselves, all the promotion has been done by us,” Cooper said. The group remain independent but says it’s been their “best year”.

But Josh actually finished reproducing the song while on tour supporting The Vamps. “That was fun,” he joked as Cooper said the band had “no grace period.” “It was quite nice now we’re playing it,” Josh commented. However, they’ve not had too many awkward encounters with fans as of yet – but Cooper revealed he had somebody slide into his DMs to ask how sweaty his feet get.

“We’ve had quite a few weird ones,” he laughed, adding: “People are strange.” Despite not having any wild tales, Josh revealed while on tour with The Vamps, they’ve been meeting fans every day at a free signing, with one fan asking Ryan to sign a broccoli. Although we’re not sure if they ended up eating it.

“Busted as well, their fans were great to us,” Josh said, reflecting on recently touring with the Busted lads. While on tour with two huge bands, you would expect a lot of crazy tales but SOAP have kept their feet firmly on the ground.

This Saturday, the lads play their first headline show of their headline tour. “It’s sold really well which is nice,” Cooper said before he excitedly added: “We’re really excited to get into those rooms and play to our own fans which will be nice. People will have come for us. It’s a fresh set with new songs we’ve released this year, it’s going to be full and fun of energy – it should be our best set.”

SOAP finished their tour with The Vamps last week and instantly went straight into rehearsals for their own tour and joked that they would be having “sleepless nights”. There are no plans for SOAP to slow down any time soon though with Cooper saying they want to get “as much music as possible out next year,” with the group laughing that there will be more pressure on Josh in the studio.
