Peaky Blinders bosses planning huge new project to mark iconic show’s return

As fans gear up for the next instalment in the smash TV series, producers at the show are now launching their next exciting project to get viewers ready for the show’s return

Peaky Blinders bosses will toast the arrival of the hit show’s two new series with a liquor line. Garrison Drama — the firm behind the first six series of the gangster franchise and the film version — wants to flog a drinks brand called Shelby & Co, named after the feared criminal clan headed by Thomas and played by Cillian Murphy.

The firm has just filed documents with the UK’s Intellectual Property Office for the sole rights to use the name to sell: “Alcoholic beverages (except beer); whisky.” Lawyers at the government department are yet to rubber-stamp the application.

Garrison Drama was owned by US producer Caryn Mandabach until it was acquired by Banjay UK in a £15m deal which gave it the rights to Peaky Blinders brand — plus commercial spin-offs. And the much-loved series will return with a bang to the BBC and Netflix, telling the story of a new generation of Shelbys, from writer and creator Steven Knight.

The two new series will be filmed at Digbeth Loc. Studios in Birmingham, and will centre on the city being rebuilt after WWII bombing. In a new era of Knight’s Peaky Blinders, the race to own Birmingham’s massive reconstruction project becomes a brutal contest.

Knight said: “I’m thrilled to be announcing this new chapter in the Peaky Blinders story. Once again it will be rooted in Birmingham and will tell the story of a city rising from the ashes of the Birmingham blitz.

“The new generation of Shelbys have taken the wheel and it will be a hell of a ride.” Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, added: “This game-changing show made a huge impact when it first came to our screens 12 years ago and it is one of the BBC’s most-loved dramas.

“Steven has worked his magic once again and I can’t wait for his scripts to be brought to life when filming begins in Birmingham. There’s plenty of drama for Peaky fans to look forward to!”

Mona Qureshi for Netflix commented: “We couldn’t be more excited to be embarking on a new chapter of Peaky Blinders. There are few modern storytellers to match Steven Knight and we will be on the edge of our seats as he returns to the streets of Birmingham and to the next generation of the Shelby family.

“Along with our global audience, we are ready to be captivated anew!” Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands. said: “Peaky Blinders is a worldwide phenomenon that’s boosted our tourism and global reach.

“We’re proud to be working with the team bringing the production back to the Shelbys’ home of Birmingham and job opportunities will follow for local people to become part of this story. It’s this sort of backing from some of the biggest names in entertainment that will turn the West Midlands into the creative capital of the UK.”

The BBC confirmed back in October that a new series was being produced, working together with Netflix to produce another two seasons of the smash hit. The release date has not been given just yet, but fans will be eager to find out what is next Tommy and the gang after the last series in 2022.
