Friends reunion 'confirmed' as original cast return for one-off special

The six original cast members of Friends are reportedly set to get back together for an hour-long special to help launch streaming service HBO Max.

The stars – Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc – are said to be netting $3-4million (£2.3-3m) for the project.

The decision came after a number of back-and-forth discussions between the cast members’ representatives, Warner Bros TV and HBO, according to Deadline.

It’s thought that the negotiations were going on last year, but broke down over money.

But fans don’t need to get too excited, as it will just be a one-off special episode to help launch re-runs of the iconic series, which will air on the upcoming streaming service HBO Max.

The service is said to have spent a whopping £425m for the rights to the 10-season show.

As of yet, it’s not clear what format the show will take, though reports suggest it will be unscripted – but any sort of reunion is sure to please fans who have been begging for one since it ended in 2004.

There was official talk of a reunion in January, with HBO Max’s Chief Creative Officer Kevin Reilly saying: “There is interest all around, and yet we can’t get the interest all alighted to push the button on it. Today it’s just maybe.”

Earlier this week, actor Matthew Perry sent fans into a frenzy when he tweeted “big news coming”, leading many to think it signalled the long-awaited Friends comeback.

The popularity of the show, which launched in 1994, is still undeniable, with a recent selfie featuring Jennifer, Courteney, Lisa, Matthew, Matt and David breaking records when it JenAn her to become the fastest person to reach 1million followers on Instagram.

Previously, co-creator Marta Kauffman said they would not be making a reboot series as “the show was about that time in life when friends are your family”.

While co-creator David Crane added: “We did the show we wanted to do. We got it right, and we put a bow on it.”
