Dr Amir Khan has told Good Morning Britain viewers that if pubs are closed in Wales, it’s “for a reason”.
From today (Friday), pubs in Wales are no longer able to sell alcohol and must close after 6pm, with First Minister Mark Drakeford announced the new rules to try and tackle a rise in Covid cases.
And while Dr Amir looked at both sides of the argument, he urged viewers not to go for drinks at their mates’ houses, as it could prove more dangerous.
“It’s such a difficult one,” he said. “They have gone through these rigorous protocols to make the venues safe.

“What I know as a doctor, alcohol reduces your inhibitions, you may not stick to rules as much.”
He added: “I do see both sides of this argument – the mental health on these owners of those venues, and the economic effect as well.
“It’s a really difficult balance to strike.”
He explained that while some pubs have introduced screens between tables, they’re not as protective as you may think.

Dr Amir said if people are talking loudly or having to shout over music, there will be more aerosol particles in the air.
The protective screens only prevent droplets, however have no effect on aerosol particles floating around inside a pub.
And he urged people hoping to still have a drink not to go round to their friends’ houses, as “it’s definitely worse” than a pub.
He said: “They’ll be closer together, windows won’t be open because it’s colder, though they should be.”
The television doctor added: “If the law or government have said you shouldn’t do something, you’re doing it for everyone else’s benefits.
“It shouldn’t be a case of the pub’s closed, I’ll go to my friend’s house instead.
“It should be pubs are closed – for a reason.”
In Wales, indoor entertainment and visitor attractions must also close, including cinemas, museums and galleries.
However businesses will be able to offer a takeaway service after 6pm, and if they have an off-license they’re allowed to sell alcohol to takeaway until 10pm.
