Kate Garraway announced “there is hope” for her husband Derek Draper during an appearance on Lorraine on Monday morning, after months of heartache.
In a recent breakthrough, Derek, 53, uttered his first word in over 200 days, as he remains in hospital under constant care.
The dad-of-two was first admitted to hospital with Covid back in March, and though he no longer has the virus, it has wreaked havoc on his internal organs.
However, last week Kate revealed Derek mouthed the word “pain” from his bed in the ward, giving her family hope for his condition.
She told host Lorraine Kelly: “There is hope.”
Kate went on: “You’ve got to believe in it for it to work. There was a little sign when Derek said those words, I thought ‘let this be the glimmer’.”
While confirming there is a “long road ahead” for Derek, Kate added: “I’m hoping it’s the beginning of him emerging.”
Kate opened up about the moment Derek spoke for the first time during an appearance on GMB earlier on Monday, tearing up as she spoke with Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid.
The 53-year-old star revealed doctors had seen him mouth the word, and quickly called Kate to let her know what had happened.
She explained: “Later I was watching and I saw him mouth it again, it is a huge breakthrough.

“It is a huge breakthrough, because, even though it’s obviously heartbreaking. Because what it means is he feels pain, which we don’t want, but it is a breakthrough because what it means…”
Pausing to wipe away her tears, she then continued: “Excuse me, sorry, what it means is he’s able to connect a sensation in his body, with his brain, and connect that with his mouth to shape the word pain.”
Kate finished: “So that says a lot, doesn’t it.”
Meanwhile, over on Twitter, viewers were moved by Kate’s appearance, as they praised her for speaking out on her family’s ordeal.

One said: “Kate Garraway is incredible. So much respect for her #Lorraine.”
“@kategarraway WHAT A WOMAN. My heart goes out to you!” wrote a second.
And a third chimed: “Watching @kategarraway on @reallorraine this morning has had me in tears, praying for her.”
Lorraine airs on weekdays at 9am on ITV.
