Simon Cowell cancels The X Factor 2020 after ratings slump

The X Factor 2020 has been axed by Simon Cowell after both X Factor: Celebrity and X Factor: The Band failed to make an impact in 2019.

A production source told Daily Star Online: “Simon is planning to rest The X Factor this year.

“He and the producers want to take a breath to really think through the show and how to reinvigorate it for the future.

“And they don’t believe they can do that if they go straight into another cycle of the show this year.”

Daily Star Online understand The X Factor will return, though no details have been finalised.

They added to The Sun: “Although The X Factor is contracted for one more series, ITV totally understand the rationale behind the idea of resting it this year and want to give Simon and the team the time to do what they feel is right.”

A spokesman for Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor said: “Plans for this autumn are still being finalised and will be announced in due course. We are currently filming Britain’s Got Talent 2020.”

At the start of 2019, Simon Cowell and ITV took the decision to put the standard version of X Factor on ice.

Instead, they launched X Factor: Celebrity which was won by Megan McKenna.

However, despite the show signing up a string of household names it failed to make an impact and ratings continued to tumble.

In a last minute shake-up, Simon and ITV decided to rush release X Factor: The Band after Little Mix announced their were launching their own talent show for 2020.

Sadly, the show – which was stuffed into a single week – also struggled to create any momentum.

It is not known when X Factor will return to ITV but previous reports claimed Simon Cowell and ITV had signed a deal to air one more series of the show.

Simon is currently filming the 2020 series of Britain’s Got Talent and is yet to comment on the fate of X Factor personally.
