Slade's Dave Hill can't serenade wife with festive hit – as she doesn't do Xmas

Slade star Dave Hill never gets to serenade his wife with his most famous festive hit.

The guitarist’s missus Jan is a strict Jehovah’s Witness and doesn’t celebrate on December 25.

And Dave says the only reason they mark the big day at all is for the sake of their grandchildren.

Dave, 74, revealed: “I celebrate Christmas, but my wife doesn’t.

“She’s religious. I’m religious too.

“But Christmas is for kids, so we have an arrangement. We have got a big family. All the grandkids come round. It’s lovely.”

Dave and his bandmates are a huge part of Christmas for millions of Brits.

Merry Xmas Everybody is still one of our most popular festive hits 47 years after it was released. The track has sold more than a million copies.

Its most famous line is when lead singer Noddy Holder screams: “It’s Christmaaas!” The festive season will be toned down for millions of Brits this year because of the global coronavirus crisis.

But glam rock legend Dave reckons it is more vital than ever that we look ahead to a brighter future.

He said: “Christmas is important, especially in times like now.

“In tough times we pull together. It’s the British way. Look to the future, it’s only just begun.”

Dave went on: “Our Christmas song is still popular because it has the feel-good factor.

“Back in 1973 we had all the strikes and problems, and our song lifted the nation.

“It’s a much more unprecedented time today and when I hear Merry Xmas Everybody being played I hope it will boost the whole situation.”
