Candice Brown's marriage was strained 'early on' amid mental health battle

Great British Bake Off star Candice Owens has told of how her relationship with husband Liam Macaulay was placed under strain in the early days of their marriage.

Candice’s rep recently confirmed that she and tree surgeon Liam had called time on their marriage, after tying the knot in 2018 and renewing their vows last year.

Days before the confirmation Candice – who triumphed in the 2016 series of Bake Off – was snapped with a ringless finger, prompting speculation that her marriage was coming to an end.

Last year the pair renewed their vows at a Thailand ceremony and Candice opened up at the time about the struggles of their early relationship – and how she’d suffered from mental health problems.

“We were tested quite early on in our relationship, and he didn’t budge then,” she told.

“I wasn’t very well, and following that I struggled with some mental health issues. It’s not something I really talk about…but Liam stayed by my side and has always stuck with me.”

She added to The Sun late last year: “I suffer with clinical depression, chronic phobia and PTSD.

“It’s hard and people don’t realise, it’s a real battle. People might be like, ‘oh, she’s jumping on the bandwagon’, but they’ve got no idea what was going on in my brain for the past five or six years.”

Candice has also told of her difficulty sleeping, calling Liam “my poor husband.”

Liam has now moved out of the home the two previously shared above The Green Man pub in Eversholt, Milton Keynes.

They moved in last year, Candice gushing: “I love it. We’ve made it cosy and our own.”

Meanwhile, Candice recently made an appearance via video call on Good Morning Britain – and slammed those who don’t show up to restaurants after making reservations.

“If we had 20 people not turn up, we would have no business,” she said.

“We fought hard to keep our business running.”
