Coronation Street star Maureen Lipman has revealed she is determined not to let soap writers water down and soften her character of Evelyn Plummer.
The Corrie legend returned to the show in 2018 playing the role of the no nonsense but fears she’s not as edgy as she once was.
Speaking on ITV’s Good Morning Britain with Lorraine Kelly, Maureen said: “Well I think they have been trying to give Evelyn a whole new side for a while but I like the old her.
“I am not keen on idea of softening her.
“I think it is a good balance to have someone who can speak her mind.”
She added: “When you watch the old episodes you watch them and they talk at the speed of the typewriter as it was written on a typewriter, so bring a bit of that back.
“She is formidable and I think she should stay formidable.”
Despite Corrie kicking off filming once more, older members of the cast are not expected to return to set until the Autumn.
“We are in separate groups, we don’t have a green room, we don’t have canteen but it has got to be done hasn’t it.

“We are all confused, we don’t really know what it is.”
To keep her busy, Maureen has bagged herself a spot on Celebrity Gogglebox.
The starlet joins Gyles Brandreth on the fly-on-the-wall show.
Joking she has no idea what the shows are she is being asked to watch, Maureen said: “I think I do about seven episodes and they show us things that I have never seen before.
“We got to see some dangly objects last week [on Naked Attraction]… I could have gone without that.
“I don’t understand any of the programmes.”
Good Morning Britain with Lorraine airs weekdays on ITV at 9am
