Eamonn Holmes scolded by This Morning guest as he takes dig at Ruth's looks

Eamonn Holmes is famous for his no-holds-barred attitude to presenting, but one comment on Monday’s This Morning hit a bum note.

His wife Ruth Langsford branded him as “brave” after he appeared to take a swipe at her looks, risking tensions in the studio.

Chatting to guests India Willoughby and Matthew Wright, the 60-year-old ITV star raised the subject of a foodie news story during the current affairs discussion.

A recent study found restaurants with bright lights can make food tastier, while mood-lighting can have the opposite effect.

Eamonn proceeded to playfully complain about his wife Ruth’s aversion to brightly-lit restaurants, revealing they were something of a pet peeve for the Loose Women star.

He said: “Do you know what my wife thinks are a crime for me to bring her to? A restaurant and the lights are on full.”

Gesturing to Ruth, he joked: “She’s a bit of a vampire, my wife.”

Ruth nodded her head in agreement, making it clear she hated overly-bright restaurants as she compared them to a “canteen”.

Matthew countered: “I always think if it’s really dark, you’re trying to cover something up, aren’t you.”

However, when Eamonn suggested Ruth liked dimly-lit restaurants because of their complementary qualities, guest India was quick to shut him down.

Eamonn asked his wife: “What is your problem?”

Ruth tried to defend herself, saying: “It’s atmosphere, isn’t it. It’s the ambiance.”

Eamonn then swiped: “I always thought with you, you’re saying you don’t look well in the light.”

Furious, Ruth snapped: “I am not,” before Eamonn replied: “You are, that’s what you’re thinking.”

Matthew burst out laughing, but India – who appeared via video call – started booing, shouting: “Don’t stand for that Ruth!”

With a stern look on her face, Ruth suggested Eamonn hammed it up before the cameras, as she lightly scolded the comment.

Hinting she might give Eamonn a telling-off later, she remarked: “He’s very brave when he’s at work, I have to say.”
