Frank Windsor, best known for his roles in Z-Cars and its spin-offs Softly, Softly and Softly, Softly: Taskforce, has died at the age of 92, his agent has confirmed.
A statement from his agent read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our much-loved client Frank Windsor at the age of 92.
“Frank passed away peacefully at his home in London on Wednesday, September 30, 2020.”
It went on: “Frank is survived by his daughter Amanda and his wife Mary, who was by his side until the end.
“As per Frank’s wishes and in keeping with Covid restrictions, there will be no funeral or memorial service, just a private cremation with his ashes being laid to rest with his beloved son David.
“Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
The actor had a career spanning five decades, with his first professional credit in 1955 and his most recent in 2004.
He played Detective Sergeant John Watt in Z-Cars between 1962 and 1965, as well as its spin-offs Softly, Softly and Softly, Softly: Taskforce from 1966 to 1976.
Frank – born Frank W Higgins – has a number of other roles, mainly on television.
He appeared as Major Charlie Grace in EastEnders opposite Albert Square legend June Brown’s Dot Cotton.
In the September 1992 episode, his character wined and dined Dot with a romantic meal but skipped out on her and the bill.
She also discovered he’d stolen her purse while she was in the bathroom.
Frank had a few roles in medical drama Casualty, playing a character called Kenneth Samuels in more than 10 episodes between 2003 and 2004.
He also played a character called Leslie Smith in a 1991 episode.
The star also had roles in the likes of Peak Practice, Midsomer Murders, All Creatures Great and Small, Doctor Who and The Avengers.
Frank attended Queen Mary’s Grammar School in Walsall, Staffordshire before going on to study speech training and drama at the Central School of Speech and Drama.
