ITV's The Sister is based on a terrifying dream show creator Neil Cross had

Tonight, Monday October 26, a chilling new drama will make its debut on ITV.

The Sister, with its gripping tag line “how far would you go to keep a secret?”, promises to be full of murder, intrigue, deception and the supernatural.

The four-part drama is based on Luther creator Neil Cross’ book Burial, and stars Flesh and Blood actor Russell Tovey.

The series focuses on his character, Nathan, a man with a terrible secret who is surprised by an unwelcome face from the past who turns up with shocking news.

Russell said: “The Sister is going to challenge me as an actor more than I’ve ever been challenged before.

“As a web of lies, that he thought was dead and buried, comes back to haunt Nathan, he sinks deeper and deeper into the horror of the event that happened ten years ago.”

Is The Sister based a true story?

The story is not based on a true story, but instead a bizarre dream he creator Neil had.

He told Daily Express: “I want to say even now, I hope I dreamt it. I was very young, I was sort of 16 or 17 and I was out of my head on rough cider in Bristol.

“We used to drink rough cider in gallon containers, it was 32p a pint and I was making my way back to my sister’s house and there was a shortcut.

“You could either walk on this very long road towards a huge swarming council estate or you could take a shortcut through the woods, through these concentre steps through the woods.”

Neil explained how he had woken up the next morning “with a very, very clear memory of coming across a homeless man, asleep on the steps, who I randomly stabbed to death”.

He added: “I woke up the next morning and there was no sense of it being a dream, I just remembered doing it to the extent I lived in degrees of fear, certainly for the next week.”

Neil said there was “no blood anywhere” but he was still following the news because he was “absolutely certain” he remembered “randomly killing this man”.

Lastly, he added: “When the internet was invented one of the first things I did when I became aware of what search engines were, I searched the old newspapers.

“So that was the inspiration. But I didn’t do it, if anyone is wondering.”

The Sister premieres on ITV on Monday, October 26 at 9pm and airs over four consecutive nights
