The Chase fans weren’t expecting a romance from today’s show, but contestant Phil tried his best to give them one.
Determined to win Chaser Anne Hegerty over, the flirty pensioner turned on his charm as he tried to make it back to base with £6,000.
Squaring up to the cash builder round, Phil revealed he was planning on making enough dosh to move to Bora Bora with his wife.
He announced: “The duchess and I would probably emigrate to Bora Bora or something like that.”
In another twist, he revealed he’d married for “lust,” before Bradley agreed that lust was a “wonderful word”.
It all kicked off when host Bradley Walsh asked which Chaser he was hoping to face, to which Phil replied: “Oh, Anne.”
When Bradley wondered why, he replied: “She’s a heartthrob to us over 60s”
In a stroke of luck, Anne appeared before him, as Bradley bellowed: “Love at first bite!”
Clearly smitten, Phil started reciting poetry as Anne grew increasingly uncomfortable from the doting attention she was receiving.
Quoting Shakespeare’s Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer Rose, he swooned: “So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long as there are people on this earth…”
However, Anne was having none of it, as she threatened to send Phil back to Bournemouth.
Unfortunately, Phil failed to make it through to the final round, meaning he was sent home empty-handed.
Bidding farewell to Anne, he mused: “What might have been Anne!”
Taking to Twitter, viewers were tickled by the flirty exchange, and expected Anne was glad to defeat the lustful Phil.
One remarked: “Phil lusting over Anne!”
A second added: “Actually, he is a character!!”
“Anne thinking ‘glad that’s over’,” chimed a third.
The Chase airs on weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
