This Morning star Alison Hammond has admitted she suffers from PTSD in an emotional interview with Lorraine Kelly.
The star appeared on the Lorraine show on Friday to discuss the release of her new book, You’ve Got To Laugh.
Lorraine remarked that Alison is a “very happy” person, as reflected in the new autobiography – which is when Alison admitted she “isn’t hurting anybody” with her own weight.
Turning the conversation to the bullying Alison endured at school, Lorraine said: “You got called horrible things at school, just because you happened to be a little bit overweight.”
Alison giggled: “Not a little bit, I was quite a lot overweight. But do you know what, I take up a little bit of extra room. Does that really hurt anybody else?”
She added: “When I was a kid, some of the kids used to say, ‘I didn’t realise elephants were brown’.
“And since then I’ve had this thing about elephants. Any time I heard the word elephant I was like, ‘Oh, are they talking about me?’
“It was like PTSD.”
Lorraine was her usual sympathetic self as she reassured Alison that she’s a TV icon for the ages – and to not let any trolling get to her.
“That’s horrible. That is absolutely awful,” she said.
Alison responded: “But do you know what? I was good with the banter and I used to give a bit of comedy and then they’d leave me alone. So I was quite good with that.”
“That’s so interesting, the amount of people that do that as a defence, it’s like a sword and shield,” Lorraine commented.
“It doesn’t define you,” Alison said. “The past is the past, it doesn’t define you.”
Fans online immediately flocked to social media in support of Alison for being so candid, as one wrote: “Alison Hammond is one of my absolute favourite people on TV. Her laugh is infectious! I’ve all the time in the world for her #Lorraine.”
“Beautiful woman Alison Hammond on #Lorraine this morning. Absolutely love her!” someone else chipped in.
Another fan echoed: “I bloody love Alison Hammond, absolute queen! She’s so funny & humble, love her!”
While a fourth viewer said: “Love Alison Hammond and I’m still disgusted that she was voted out after 2 weeks in Big Brother. But Alison won really after what came after it…. Will have a look at buying her book!”
Alison explained on the show how she had been recruited for This Morning after the team caught sight of her eviction tape on Big Brother – and claimed it was “fate” which saw her eliminated second.
Lorraine airs from 9am weekdays on ITV.
