BBC Breakfast came close to chaos on Friday morning, as rugby star Ugo Monye threatened to give the camera a cheeky ‘flash’ during a segment about Strictly Come Dancing.
As presenters Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty on the red sofa cut to recorded interviews with this year’s Strictly stars, Ugo admitted he was finding the whole experience of being Strictlyfied very different.
The sports star admitted to entertainment correspondent Colin Patterson: “It’s been unbelievable! From finding out what my chest size was to my collarbone to my bellybutton, to putting on sheer snakeskin tops to learning how to dance – but everything has just been amazing!”
To demonstrate his point, Ugo tugged at the sparkly snakeskin shirt he wore, revealing a wider triangle of toned chest.
Colin couldn’t help but quip: “I thought you were going to give us a flash there!”
Shouts and laughter erupted from the camera crew, with Ugo’s professional dance partner Oti Mabuse widening her eyes and looking off to the floor as Ugo teasingly tugged at his shirt once more.
“I learned a lot in rugby which is so unhelpful for dancing,” Ugo later explained. “You need stiff ankles in rugby, you need flexible ankles in dancing.
“You need to be able to lift your arms.”
Oti put in: “That’s something, straightening his hands above his head!” as Ugo attempted to raise one arm above his head. “Look how much pain he’s in! But we will sort that out.”
“I’m not sure the judges need to see that face when I [raise my arm],” Ugo responded.
The conversation soon turned to BBC Breakfast’s very own Dan Walker, with Colin quizzing Aljaž Škorjanec: “BBC Breakfast is representing this year, with Dan Walker – what do you think of him?”
The professional dancer responded: “He has this great spark in him just standing there, so I can’t wait to see him in a tail suit, in a ballroom number, because I think it’s going to suit him to a T. I can’t wait to see him on the floor.”
Dragons’ Den star Sara Davies, meanwhile, added that her own mum will be voting for Dan throughout the show.
“I love Dan,” she explained. “But not as much as my mum. My mum’s like, ‘Is it all right if we vote for Dan as well, pet?’. I was like, ‘Mother! Come on!'”
Dan’s dance partner Nadiya has come up with a rather stern new nickname for him – insisting on calling him ‘Daniel’ throughout.
“Do many people call you Daniel in your life?” Colin wondered.
And Dan quickly responded: “My mum, and Nadiya!”
BBC Breakfast airs from 6am every day on BBC One.
