BBC Breakfast host Charlie Stayt didn’t hesitate in shutting down his co-presenter Naga Munchetty on Thursday morning, as a row about Banksy artworks turned tense.
The pair were discussing one of the iconic graffiti artist’s works which is up for sale once more after being found to have a hidden shredder in it – which destroyed the £1million painting at auction.
Charlie began the segment by saying: “Now, not many works of art will treble in value if you put them through a shredding machine, but that’s what’s expected to happen to a Banksy painting today.”
Naga added: “You may remember this moment which I imagine horrified many… it was in 2018 when the painting, Girl With Balloon, dropped into a hidden shredder. It had just been sold for more than £1million.
“So the work is now renamed and it’s called Love In A Bin, and it’s being auctioned at Sotheby’s today. The price has gone up somewhat – it’s now expected to fetch well over £3.5million.”
Charlie mused: “I think the moral of the story is just keep expensive works of art a long way away from shredders!”
But Naga didn’t agree with his assessment, as she insisted: “No! The moral of the story is put it in a shredder and then it goes up by three and a half times its normal amount!”
Charlie wondered: “So you’re saying the moral of the story is put all expensive works of art through a shredder?”
“Well, it worked there, didn’t it? Because it was worth a million and now it’s worth three and a half million! To be honest, I don’t think there was any moral to what happened… it just happened,” Naga responded.
But Charlie soon said: “I’m not on board with that method!” – completely shutting Naga down.
And the pair then turned to weather presenter Carol Kirkwood to clear things up between them, with Naga urging: “Come on Carol.”
But she clearly didn’t want to get involved in their row, as she quickly said: “I think I’d better get on with the weather! Good morning everybody!”
Charlie and Naga collapsed into giggles at her neutrality, unable to hold back their laughter on the red sofa.
It comes after Naga returned to the programme after a mystery absence last week – which was soon resolved as she took to social media to show off her golfing skills.
Naga had been up in the Scottish Highlands enjoying some time on the green.
Posting a snap of the golf course swathed in green to Instagram, Naga captioned the snap: “My happy place. Have had a fabulous few days (never enough). Great golf, weather and laughing with friends. I will be back! X”.
