Tim Burton’s adaptation of the Roald Dahl book Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, was released this week in 2005 – which means the film came out a whopping 16 years ago.
The movie had an estimated £100million budget and starred some incredible actors and actresses that have gone on to have flourishing careers, but some of them turned their backs on acting altogether, with one trading eating chocolate to advising against it.
The colourful flick starred a personal favourite of Tim Burton’s Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka, as well as British child star Freddie Highmore, who played the main role of Charlie Bucket.
Freddie Highmore (Charlie Bucket)
Born on February 14, 1992 in Camden Town, London, Freddie shot to fame after starring in children’s feature films like Finding Neverland, The Spiderwick Chronicles and The Golden Compass, but took a break from his acting career to go to university.
He didn’t stay away from acting for too long though, as from 2013 to 2017, he portrayed the iconic role of Norman Bates in the popular TV series Bates Motel – a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, which he won many awards for.
Not only did he have the main role in Bates Motel, but he also ventured into writing and directing some of the episodes for the popular series featuring Vera Farmiga.
Since Bates Motel wrapped up in 2017 he has undertook the lead role of Dr Shaun Murphy in the drama series The Good Doctor – a show he also produced and directed.
Although acting in American TV shows and blockbuster movies, the now 29-year-old lives in London and avoids social media.
He developed a close friendship with his on-screen mother from Bates Motel, Vera Farmiga and became a godfather to her son.
Johnny Depp (Willy Wonka)
Johnny Depp is one of the most famous actors in Hollywood, starring in an abundance of blockbusters including the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
A Tim Burton regular, Johnny has worked on Sweeney Todd, Alice in Wonderland and Dark Shadows with Tim since appearing as Willy Wonka.
Although his career is brimming with Hollywood blockbusters, Depp has had a turbulent personal life more recently.
On November 2 last year, a court ruled against Depp in the highly publicised libel trial between him and The Sun, over an article which labelled him a “wife beater” in relation to his marriage to Amber Heard.
Judge Mr Justice Nicol ruled that the publication’s reporting was “substantially true”.
He went on to appeal the ruling, however it was refused in March of this year, with a judge saying it had “no real prospect of success”.
AnnaSophia Robb (Violet Beauregarde)
AnnaSophia was scouted by an agent at just eight years old, which led her to appear in a number of American commercials for the likes of Bratz and McDonalds.
She rose to international fame when she appeared as Violet Beauregarde. Taking on the role saw the young star chew gum before turning into a giant blueberry.
Tim Burton’s remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which was a box office success worldwide, helped escalate her popularity among younger audiences.
The actress is now 27, and has starred in several films including, Bridge To Terabithia and Because of Winn-Dixie.
These roles helped her to land the major role of a young Carrie Bradshaw in the American Sex and the City spin-off – The Carrie Diaries.
The series was launched as a prequel to Sex and the City, but it was cancelled in 2014.
The actress has amassed more than 1.1million followers on Instagram and often talks about various causes and charities on the platform.
Philip Wiegratz (Augustus Gloop)
Famed for playing Augustus Gloop in the Johnny Depp-led movie, the German actor is still mainly known for this role that he had to wear a fat-suit for!
Philip has only starred in German films and TV shows since reprising the role of Augustus.
Now 28, the actor hasn’t been active in the acting world since 2013, when he starred in a German television documentary.
Julia Winter (Veruca Salt)
Julia is a Swedish-born British child actress who played the spoiled brat Veruca Salt in Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. She also dubbed over her character’s voice in the Swedish version of box office smash hit.
Sadly the talented actress, who famously fell down a hole after chasing some squirrels, decided to turn her back on acting with her last public appearance being on Dick and Dom in da Bungalow in 2006, when she appeared as a celebrity guest.
It has been reported that the former child star went home to Sweden to study medicine, but she’s not on social media at all.
Now 28 years old she is thought to be practicing as a doctor.
Jordan Fry (Mike Teavee)
Since his role in the Tim Burton flick, Jordan has continued dabbling in acting.
His recent credits include supporting roles in Gone, which starred Amanda Seyfried and he’ll also star alongside Jonathan Rhy Meyers in the recently announced movie Byrd And The Bees.
Unlike Julia and Freddie, Jordan is on social media and posts photos of himself often.
With only 12,000 followers, his posts tend to rack up between 500 and 2,000 likes.
