Christmas number one 2021: Who will top the charts as LadBaby and The Kunts battle it out

The battle for the Christmas number 1 spot has rarely seen more different songs duke it out than the two-horse race of LadBaby Vs The Kunts.

One offers a wholesome ensemble of Christmas cheer featuring Ed Sheeran and Elton John, the other a profanity-ridden attack on Prime Minister Boris Johnson, likening him to a ghoul hunted down by the Ghost Busters.

There is no love lost between these two polar opposites either, with accusations being slung in both directions.

LadBaby, who are looking to secure their fourth crown in as many years have laid into the Kunts, who have in turn swung back to create a very funny but not very Christmassy war of words that has left the country just as divided as ever.

What have LadBaby and the Kunts said to each other?

The Kunts are not big fans of the LadBaby Christmas single

LadBaby frontman, Mark Hoyle who created the group with his wife Roxanne and two children, said: “It takes a certain sort of person to download a song with that in the title, but you never know.”

The family band’s tune, Sausage Rolls For Everyone, is working in tandem with the Trussell Trust and aims to donate all its proceeds to charity. Hoyle added: “There’s definitely an element that people aren’t happy with this government, but our song is for charity – I don’t believe theirs is – and ours is trying to raise more money than ever for food banks.

“It’s something that is even more important given everything that is going on.”

The Kunts have hit back, however, accusing LadBaby of using their model to sell records. In a statement released to The Clash, the band’s singer Kunt, said: “Regarding Mark Hoyle’s comments that ‘it takes a certain sort of person to download a song with that in the title’, I agree with him wholeheartedly.”

Their track, Boris Johnson Is STILL A F*****g C***, sees what is supposed to be the prime minister running away from pursuers, money falling from his pockets as he goes.

“It takes the sort of person that is prepared to look beyond the tepid diarrhoea that is pumped into people’s consciousness via mainstream TV, radio and the tabloid newspapers. The sort of person that is prepared [to] stand up for what they believe in and call out the government on their lies, cover-ups and corruption.

“The sort of person who can see that it was the Conservatives’ politics of selfishness, misery and deprivation that caused this country to need foodbanks in the first place.

“We may be vulgar in the language we use to get our point across but we would not be so vulgar as to use food banks to hawk records, increase our profile or sign lucrative sponsorship deals.”

The Kunts have claimed that some proceeds of their 2020 song, Boris Johnson Is A F*****g C***, also went to charities.

He added: “Let me be clear, we would not stoop to using poverty, hunger and despair to promote our career and bolster our bank balance like we believe LadBaby have done in this year’s and last year’s Christmas Number One campaign.”

“But please don’t let any of this distract from the fact that the Trussell Trust is a necessary and worthy charity at this point in time and it is good to support food banks with donations of food and money, we do, but at the root of the problem is the corrupt and heartless Conservative government, and the man in charge of that who leads by example is Boris Johnson.”

‘And he is STILL a f*****g c***.’

When is the Christmas number 1 announced?

The Kunts were formed by Essex man Kunt and the Gang

The Christmas number 1 will be announced with Scott Mills on the Official Chart Show on Radio 1 from 4 pm.

LadBaby could become only the second band, after the Beatles, to secure four Christmas number 1s and would be the first to do so consecutively.

Who is in the lead for Christmas number 1?

At the time of writing, LadBaby are firm favourites to secure the accolade, with bookmakers Coral pitting them odds on to go all the way.

A spokesperson for the gambling firm said: “Our betting suggests LadBaby has a 94% chance of bagging the UK Christmas number one single for a fourth consecutive year. It is going to take a huge late surge towards another artist for him to be beaten.”
