Coronation Street star Adam Hussain has revealed his sister was racially abused on a Manchester tram and has called for ‘more to be done’ to stamp out the “horrible” behaviour.
The 20-year-old actor has portrayed Aadi Alahan on the ITV soap since last year and has also appeared in The Bay and Absentia.
Posting to Twitter on Sunday, Aadi shared that his 19-year-old sister got “called a terrorist” while travelling on a tram from Manchester Airport to Cornbrook in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Adam wrote: “My little sister was racially abused… when she was coming home from a night shift, [six] in the morning yesterday.
“It just goes to show how rampant racism still is.”
He added the hashtags: “#racist #nameandshame.”
Following his post, Adam dubbed the incident “appalling and outrageous” and claimed a tram driver had witnessed the incident without intervening.
He has since demanded action from Metrolink and the Greater Manchester Police.
Adam told Manchester Evening News: “My sister is studying at [university] so she’s been doing night shifts to save a bit of money, and she was coming home on the tram around 6 in the morning.
“I find it appalling and outrageous that she has to deal with this – exhausted.
“I hope more is done as people like this think they can say and act in such vile manners and think they can get away with it.
“I feel not many people report this sort of stuff because they feel nothing will be done and can’t be bothered with all the hassle – but that’s what motivates people even more to behave in a horrible way.”
Metrolink bosses have since confirmed a “full investigation is being carried out” after being made aware of the incident.
They have also pledged to “fully support Greater Manchester Police with their inquiries.”
“We have been made aware of an alleged racial abuse incident on one of our services over the weekend,” said director of Customer Experience, Growth and Innovation at tram operator KeolisAmey Metrolink, Damien Chabas.
“Behaviour of this nature is unacceptable and will not be tolerated on our network.”
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday on ITV
