Coronation Street’s Pat Phelan to make big TV return as he joins Ackley Bridge

Some viewers will no doubt shiver in fear as they witness Connor McIntyre’s valiant return to TV as the former Corrie actor joins comedy-drama Ackley Bridge.

The actor, who won Villain of the Year at the British Soap Awards 2018, played the villainous Pat Phelan on the cobbles from 2013 until his death at the hands of Anna Windass in 2018.

Connor went on to star in the Cinderella panto at Manchester Opera House after quitting Corrie, starring alongside his former co-star and rival Les Dennis.

Les said of the role “It’s Michael’s chance to get revenge” after his Corrie character Michael met his own sticky end at Phelan’s hands.

But now he’s set to debut in Channel 4’s Ackley Bridge as Cooper, the grandad of new traveller character Johnny.

The Scouse star hasn’t appeared as an actor in any TV programmes since he left Coronation Street – so some fans will definitely be clamouring to see how he’ll fare in a different role.

Newcomer Johnny is a cheeky chap from a Romany Gypsy community, whose arrogant facade falls to reveal a more sensitive soul underneath.

Johnny has been making waves with the ladies, especially Kayla and Fizza, but it’s yet to be seen what his relationship with his grandfather will be.

He might not be as sure of himself as he first appears, but we’ll have to wait to see who will crack through his bold veneer to see the real him.

Fans of the show can expect to see some further new faces as season four airs, including new pupil Marina (Carla Woodcock), Kayla’s ‘mean girl’ sister.

Shobhit Piasa will also be joining the cast as Tahir, Kaneez’s smooth-talking nephew who instantly falls head over heels for Sam.

But behind Tahir’s confident patter lurks a family secret.

Jo Joyner is also set to reprise her role as Mandy – but her final scenes will air halfway through the series.

Jo announced she was quitting the show, admitting “it’s time to move on”.

She told Lorraine: “The kids grow up, they leave, and we get a whole flux of new brilliant people on board. […] That’s the nature of a school drama.”

All ten episodes will air across two weeks on Channel 4, with the full boxset immediately available via All4.

But in 2019, Connor refused to rule out a return to Corrie – suggesting he could make a return to Weatherfield as Pat Phelan’s twin brother, Nat Phelan.

He posted a sinister photo on Twitter with his silhouette framed in a spotlight, and fans were certain it could be a mock-up of his return to the cobbles.

When one fan tweeted: “I keep saying this. Bring @connor9mcintyre back as Pat Phelan’s identical twin brother. Nat Phelan.”

And Connor replied to the message with two cry-laughing faces and a praying emoji.
