Coronation Street fans were unsettled by one storyline on Monday, as Ryan Connor awoke from a night of drinking, unable to remember whether he’d had sex with Daisy Midgeley.
The barmaid, played by Charlotte Jordan, plied him with cocktails the night previously, with the closing scenes of Friday’s episode showing her place a hand on Ryan’s (Ryan Connor) leg.
Ryan could be seen shirtless in Daisy’s bed the following morning, though it’s not clear whether they engaged in a sexual act.
Regardless, Corrie fans found the storyline disturbing, as Daisy was clearly taking advantage of Ryan’s drunken state.
Taking to Twitter, viewers hoped scriptwriters would give the apparent assault the credence it deserved, as it dealt with the importance of consent.
One said: “Ryan was too drunk to give consent & he did look uncomfortable when Daisy touched his leg in Fridays episode. Sex without consent is rape!”
A second agreed: “Daisy intentionally got Ryan drunk and put him into bed with her. When someone is drunk and you ask them to have sex, that is not proper consent. That is a planned rape.”
“They doing a rape story line with Ryan – hope he goes to the police and gets taken seriously,” added a third.
“Uncomfortable watching the aftermath of Ryan and Daisy’s night together,” wrote a fourth.
Ryan was unable to remember whether he’d had sex with Daisy, and begged her to keep the details of their night together from his girlfriend Alya Nazir (Sair Khan).
However, when Alya called by the pub later that day, she overheard a conversation between Daisy and Ryan, and the truth came to the surface.
Alya was devastated to realise Ryan had lied to her, while Daisy failed to mention she had deliberately made him drunk and hidden his phone.
As the storyline takes a dark turn, will Ryan see Daisy’s true colours?
