Corrie's Victoria Ekanoye, 39, plans double mastectomy after breast cancer diagnosis

Victoria Ekanoye has revealed that she wants to undergo a double mastectomy amid her tragic breast cancer diagnosis.

The ex-Coronation Street star, 39, only just welcomed her first child, her baby boy of 11 months – Theo.

Victoria first discovered a lump in her breast whilst feeding her infant son, and she shared the heartbreaking cancer diagnosis with her fans last week.

The soap star played Angie Appleton – Jude’s wife – on the hit ITV soap from 2017 until 2019.

The actress is now set to undergo an operation to to tackle the DCIS (Ductal carcinoma in situ).

Discussing her decision on Thursday’s Loose Women, Victoria opened up about her cancer diagnosis.

She said: “I’m having a double mastectomy. I just don’t want to look over the shoulder for the rest of my life.

“‘I’ve got a baby boy and family and friends so if I can eliminate as much risk as possible then I will. It has a longer recovery time but will take the risk away so it’s peace of mind for my mental health.”

Victoria explained that she had to go and see three separate doctors before she received her diagnosis, as she had a “gut feeling” that something wasn’t right with her body.

Victoria has also been fighting sickle cell disease, which can disrupt the process of going under anesthetic.

She went on: “With me having sickle cell, it’s dangerous to go under the anesthetic anyway, so they don’t want to have to do that twice, which is why the reconstruction will happen at the same time.”

She’ll therefore have both her breasts removed together.

Opening up about the fateful day of when she found out she had breast cancer, Victoria revealed that she cried a lot and hadn’t told anyone.

“I’ll be honest I cried a lot that day. I hadn’t told anyone.

“This lump would protrude, you could see it really clearly. It was just another mountain to climb, to face it head on and get it checked by professionals.”

The actress also said that her mum and auntie suffered from breast cancer, but didn’t have the gene, and that she’s the fifth person in her family to develop breast cancer without the gene present.

Victoria, who was diagnosed on October 13 with DCIS, and is now a patron of Prevent Breast Cancer.
