Doctor Who return date unveiled as dramatic Jodie Whittaker exit confirmed

The return date for iconic BBC sci-fi show Doctor Who has officially been confirmed, with the 13th series of the revival set to hit BBC One and BBC iPlayer later this month.

The latest series, dubbed Doctor Who: Flux, will release on both platforms from Sunday, October 31st – but we’re yet to see if the episode will be Halloween-themed to tie in with the date.

It comes after it was announced in July that both Jodie and showrunner Chris Chibnall would quit the show next year.

The BBC announced that Jodie will bid farewell to being the Time Lord in 2022, as she paid tribute to the Doctor Who team in a sweet statement.

“In 2017 I opened my glorious gift box of size 13 shoes. I could not have guessed the brilliant adventures, worlds and wonders I was to see in them. I will carry the Doctor and the lessons I’ve learnt forever,” she said.

The actress dubbed Doctor Who “the best job I have ever had”, thanking Chris for entrusting the storylines to her.

Jodie added: “I know change can be scary and none of us know what’s out there. That’s why we keep looking. Travel hopefully. The universe will surprise you. Constantly.”

Showrunner Chris Chibnall added in July: “Jodie and I made a ‘three series and out’ pact with each other at the start of this once-in-a-lifetime blast. So now our shift is done, we’re handing back the Tardis keys.”

Jodie was appointed as the first ever female Doctor in 2017, and has been at the helm of the show since then.

For her final series, Jodie will be once again joined by Mandip Gill, reprising her role as Yaz, with comedian John Bishop also signed up to play a new character called Dan.

The next series will be followed by three specials – the first of which is to be broadcast on New Year’s Day 2022, with another to follow in spring.

Jodie’s last appearance – and the Doctor’s next regeneration – will air in autumn 2022 as part of the BBC’s Centenary celebrations.

It comes after the show’s ratings dropped in recent years – with the last episode fronted by Jodie back in January attracting viewing figures of 6.3million.

Her first episode, in October 2018, attracted the biggest Doctor Who audience for nearly a decade, with a staggering 11.5million people tuning in.
